One Day trip- Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge & Windsor

Hi There!

My friend and I are looking for a good tour that leaves from London and includes sites Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge & Windsor castle. What are your recommendations?

I know there are tour companies that provide combo tours to these 3 places but I’d not recommend squishing them together.

To me:

  • Windsor Castle takes 1/2 - 3/4 of a day and can be easily done as a day trip from London

  • Salisbury is easily reached by train from London. The local bus company has a shuttle bus they run out to the stones which leaves from the rail station. You can take the bus out there, see the stones with the audio guide , catch the bus back by Old Sarum stopping if you want, then get off at the Salisbury City Centre stop for the visit to the cathedral and cathedral Close. To me seeing Salisbury and Stonehenge takes a full day.

The bus company is the Salisbury Reds and the special shuttle is called the Stonehenge Tour even though it is not guided. The bus has a large picture of Stonehenge on the outside. Just buy your tickets from the driver.

How long do you have in London?

Yes, I agree with Pam. Salisbury and Stonehenge make sense together, Windsor is a separate trip. Trying to see all three in a day would mean an unsatisfactory visit to all three.

I cannot imagine combining all three of these important sites in one day. Windsor is so easy to do on your own. Train with one change to a local shuttle. Get your ticket for Windsor ahead!

You might check out viator. They have several bundled tours which include those sights ( except maybe Salisbury cathedral). There's a Windsor, Stonehenge, Bath tour that looks interesting. Salisbury cathedral is nice but doesn't stick out in my mind as particularly note worthy. Windsor is interesting - 1-2 hours touring was sufficient for us but beware the line to get in even for tour groups is a bit long. Stonehenge is good especially with the selfguided hand held units. Takes about an hour to tour not counting transport to/from the visitor center (tram) and time in the visitor center/gift shop. Bath is fantastic and you could easily spend 1-2 hours touring the roman baths - again with the hand held guides.

With Viator, just make sure you know details like refund policy, pick up location, what is or isn't included. Each tour is different.

I went to Salisbury Cathedral and Windsor Castle on my own via train as separate day trips. It could not have been easier. There were docents at Salisbury Cathedral whose tours were second to none. With Windsor Castle in terms of the grounds, the public areas, and St George's Chapel, there were people there who are a font of information and with a travel guide book, you're all set.

I haven't gone to Stonehenge as people are kept far away from it and I think a tour bus might be necessary.
