Sadly, Number 63 on Bayswater Rd, London, has just announced it is closing as of October 1, 2026. It’s been my favorite place to stay for a number of years, especially when I’m traveling solo. I appreciated its reasonably priced rooms and convenient location.
I’d be interested in recommendations for similar accommodations in London. I have stayed at Vancouver Studios but found the stairs a bit much, especially as my knees are getting somewhat creaky.
You may want to check out the London House Hotel. I stayed there twice, but it has been several years since I stayed there. Google maps says it is about a 17 minute walk from Number 63. It is near two tube stations. It was very nice, clean and the staff was helpful. Nice breakfast, extra I believe. I booked a single room, that was very small, then the second time, I booked a double room and that was larger but not huge, just more comfortable. I also like staying a week so a double was perfect for me.
I think you may like it, but do look at reviews and other information about the hotel. It does have an elevator!

Nooo!! I have two go-to hotels in London and, of the two, Number 63 is preferred due to its location and affordability. Well, shoot. Thanks for posting this, @smy.
There appear to be a number of modestly priced hotels on nearby Sussex Gardens. Has anyone stayed there? Especially in single rooms?
Number 63 was very highly recommended to me by a forum member when I went to London for my very first time.
Loved being across from Kensington Gardens.

We used to stay at Mitre House in Sussex Gardens many stays over the years. Basic and small rooms, but perfectly acceptable, with very nice staff.
Given this news, I am debating whether to keep our reservations. I wonder if service, room conditions, etc. will be decidedly different with the closure occurring a week from when we are there. Thoughts from you all would be appreciated. Thanks for letting us know about this change smy.
I'd suggest just calling the hotel and share your concerns and see what they have to say. Their response may be reassuring or lead you to make a change. A friend with an early October reservation contacted them to ask for suggestions of other hotels in the area and they responded quickly with a couple recommendations.
I may do that, or I just might just go ahead and change to the Premier Inn we stayed at near Paddington Station. It is very convenient as we will be coming in from the Cotswolds to that station. Did your friend share with you if they gave the reason for their closure? It seems very sudden.
No reason given. As you likely know, the inn is owned by Soroptimist International, a nonprofit organization, so it may have been a financial decision by the governing group.
I booked my room for April 2027 for one night and contacted Guest reservations for a refund. They gave me a case number and said a manager has to approve the refund. They were trying to contact the hotel. They told me to wait 13 hours and the money should come back to me. No refund yet.
I just went to number63.co.uk and there is no mention of the hotel closing. In fact, the webpage says to book accommodations at Hotel 63.
Puzzling.
Edited: when I clicked on book accommodations, it took me to the page that says it is closing!
This seems to be getting common for (former) lodging. Yesterday, I’d tried to book a room at a B&B in Salisbury, recommend the Rick Steves England guidebook from Feb. 2023, but the Website said it couldn’t complete the booking. Only after I looked for Rick’s guidebook updates on his Website did I see that it had actually closed - no date given.
I posted a Forum question if anyone had other recommendations, and mentioned that the B&B had seemed perfect. A poster who knew the couple who’d run the place for decades said they closed it shortly after the Covid pandemic, but why is there still a Website in 2026 that lets you initiate a booking request?
We had a favorite London B&B in Marylebone, but the couple running it shut it down for good after Covid hit. We’ve found a different place for several stays in London since then.
I’m sorry for people who’d been regulars at Number 63, or folks who were looking forward for their chance to stay there. Things do change, for better or worse. May everyone find an acceptable new place in the future.
I called Guest Reservations, a part of Priceline, this morning and they confirmed the Hotel 63 is closed. They cancelled my reservation and are now processing my refund for $211.62.
I stayed there a couple times and really liked it. Staff were very helpful and friendly. The rooms were small, basic but well organized with a kettle and coffee and tea. I found it comfortable and loved saving money in a great location near pubs, two tube stations and Paddington Station.
I wonder if it will be renovated into a nice expensive hotel?
Sorry to hear this. I've stayed at No. 63 a number (no pun intended) of times. What a great location, and the breakfast room has always been a peaceful place to start the day. Wishing all the best as we look for new "go-to" places in London.
