Indian restaurant recommendations

Hi all seeking recommendations for good Indian restaurants beyond the Conde Naste / Michelin list. Near the SoHo area. We already plan on Gunpowder for a lunch and Dishoom for breakfast. Thank you!

I’m a big fan of the sausage and egg naan and a cup of chai at Dishoom. You may want to consider going back for lunch or dinner.

I have never tried Asma Khan’s Darjeeling Express but it is on my list. It is in Soho.

It is a chain, but I like Masala Zone.

If you are interested in Indian cookery, I have taken 2 classes with Monisha Bharadwaj. She is an excellent teacher and has written a number of cookery books. I took my classes at Divertimenti, but she does classes out of her home:

I am a big fan of Marsala Zone too. I love their Thali...smaller portions of a variety of items, all different. I have gone a dozen times or more and always constantly good and good service.
I always reserve online every time I am in London which is at least once a year.

Dishoom is good too but no reservations for smaller groups, which is one teason I don't go often. The food itself is very good but more of fusion than Marsala Zone which seems a little more traditional to me.
I haven't been to Gunpowder

For Indian food in London, we enjoy Quilon near Buckingham Palace and St. James' Park. I see on their website that it is Michelin-starred and they take online reservations. hhtps://www.quilon.co.uk

It may or may not be relevant to the OP, but Brick Lane is regarded as a centre for Indian food. There's a large Bangladeshi community and a wide choice of Indian restaurants. I'm not going to recommend any specifics because I'm a few years out of date, but walking Brick Lane in the evening armed with your most trusted online source of reviews is a good way to find an Indian meal. Probably a fraction of the price of Dishoom too.

Thanks Gerry M this seems like the thing to do with my son and it is moving onto our Saturday evening dinner plans. He loves curry and is looking for spice (but I wont let him do the Cinnamon Club thing because we are only there for a short time)!

One place I have been more recently in Brick Lane is Raj Mahal Sweets. A very wide range of Indian sweet treats. They are open until 11pm so you may catch them in the evening if you're down that way for dinner.

That sounds interesting. Will add that possibility. Thx Gerry

If you're in Soho the best way to get to Brick Lane is by the Elizabeth Line from Tottenham Court Road Station to Liverpool Street Station. Alternatively, the Central Line from Tottenham Court Road or Oxford Circus or the number 8 bus from New Oxford Street (100 yards from Tottenham Court Road Station). Brick Lane is a five minute walk from Liverpool Street Station.

As a rule, practically every neighbourhood in London will have several Indian restaurants. Many are very high quality without the fusion styles and prices of the swankier west end places. Most or all will be on the delivery apps such as Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats if you want to stay in and eat. Don't rule out the local places for good food.

There's similar little strips in London for other cuisines too. Edgware Road for Middle Eastern, Kingsland Road at Shoreditch for Vietnamese, Kingsland High Street / Stoke Newington High Street / Green Lanes for Turkish, to name a few.
