A Fun Friday Night in Shoreditch

My husband and I (early 30's) will be doing a day trip to Cambridge on Friday, Feb 23 and it looks like our train back to London will be arriving at around 7:00 pm to the Liverpool Street station. Instead of fighting the tube to get back to our hotel right away, I thought it would be fun to plan our evening around exploring Shoreditch for easy access and fun. I'd love to know what anyone's opinion on the perfect Friday night in Shoreditch would entail. We love food (we have a few Michelin dinners reserved) so we would be down for maybe something nice or go the opposite route for street food, bar hopping and mingling with the local young-folks. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

not to answer the asked question, sorry, because Shoreditch is a moving target and I haven't been back since covid, but just to mention that the Anglia train service into London Liverpool Street is not the fastest or most direct train back to the Capital.

Great Northern non-stops do the trip to London Kings Cross in 48 minutes, about half the time that the Anglia trains take.

May mean nothing with your plans but I thought you should know...

It almost sounds like you have tickets 2 whole months out. I usually get mine a couple of days out.

For dining, Ottolenghi Spitalfields is a short walk from Liverpool Street Station. There is also a Dishoom Shoreditch which is a little farther from the station.

Brat in Shoreditch is a very trendy restaurant. Gloria is an OTT decorated Italian and popular with a young crowd. Tons of places to get a drink in the area and they will all be heaving on a Friday night. I’d Google for what you’re interested in - cocktail bars, wine etc. Great Eastern Street and around has a good selection.

For something quick to eat Boxpark is a selection of takeaway outlets in shipping containers. You can eat at communal tables.

The average age on here skews a little older than the Shoreditch party crowd so tips might not be the best (Helen is pretty spot on though). Many of the places I used to go to in Shoreditch have closed or been completely flattened so I'm not the best these days either, but a couple of thoughts anyway...

Village Underground is a great music / club venue. On Friday 23rd February they have DJ duo Andhim, who I'm not familiar with, but the promoter is Bugged Out!, who have been putting on excellent parties in Manchester and London for many years.

One of my favourites from a few years ago was Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes. They're still going and will be buzzing on a Friday night.

On Kingsland Road there's a strip of Vietnamese Restaurants. Sông Quê is excellent.

A little further up Kingsland Road is Brilliant Corners, where I've been more recently. They are noted for having arguably the most pristine sound system in London; one for the music lovers.

Further up Kingsland Road is Dalston. I could recommend some places there if you're interested, but this post would be straying a little too far from Shoreditch to stay rigidly on topic.

As Helen said, Great Eastern Street will be busy. As will be Commercial Street, Shoreditch High Street, Redchurch Street and Old Street amongst others. You'll have no problem finding somewhere to have a fun time.

I agree with the rec for Box Park. A fun choice of street food and you may get to meet and chat with people as it’s communal tables.

Hi Loren,
I'd go with Dishoom but then again, we always favor food from the subcontinent over say, Michelin places coz of my hearing issues. Actually, we would also give preference to some of the Brick Lane weekend market street food, superb Spanish being but example. Agree that BoxPark is a good match for your demographic, if you prefer to socialize-- *don't miss their Brazilian Acai booth for dessert!

Below is our overloooooong TR for London. We based in Brick Lane, so there is a whole section devoted to Shoreditch. There may be a couple things of interest for you. This report won the 'Longest TR posted on a Travel forum' award for 2022.

No, see gregglamarsh (zebec), it actually won the 'Most Self-involved Wankery posed as a Photo Essay' award---editors.
