We ate at Old Lisbon twice as Jules was catering a special event and not open the only night we were available. This Portuguese restaurant is only block off the main square. I had a respectable version of a long-time favorite of mine, carne de porco Alentejana; my husband had a very hearty, varied cataplana. Normally, I’d skip seafood if we are well inland, but everything turned out fine here. All of the shellfish was fresh and tasty. Their crunchy garlicky toast was great, and the homemade hot-out-of-the oven pasteis de nata were better than anything I have ever eaten in Portugal or elsewhere. The second night, we both had the piri piri chicken. Perhaps I should have reconsidered when the waiter referred to it as the “Romanian version of spicy”. It was the blandest piece of chicken known to man, but the portion size was a generous half chicken, and it was juicy and well-cooked on the grill. I ate another basket of the crunchy toast with it, but skipped dessert. Both bills were around $40 including a glass of vinho verde. I’d suggest a reservation, especially for inside tables, as they are limited. The tables on the piata were pleasant, but crowded. You might need a reservation there, too.
