I am planning a 12-day visit to Copenhagen in April/May. Hotels across the bridge in Malmo, Sweden, are roughly half the price of those in central Copenhagen. The train websites say the journey from Malmo to Copenhagen Central is 38 minutes. Is it worthwhile to stay in Malmo? Is there a passport check at the train station?
Denmark and Sweden are both part of the Schengen zone, so mo passport checking is done, though spot checks are possible, so you wouldn't want to leave your passport in your Malmo hotel.
That said, do you really want to eat up roughly two hours a day getting to Copenhagen each day? And more on the days you'll undoubtedly do day trips within Denmark? That's figuring in time to go between your hotel and the Malmo train station plus time waiting for the train.
For me, waking up and stepping out of my hotel and being in Copenhagen was part of the thrill. But if you are seriously budget conscious and have taken the cost of train tickets into consideration, then do what you must.
But do a Google search first for other alternatives within Denmark, and less expensive neighborhoods in or on the outskirts of Copenhagen. This came up when I did a search:
- Roskilde: A historic city roughly 25-30 minutes by train from Copenhagen, offering a quieter, cheaper alternative.
- Amager/Ørestad: Located near the airport and city center via metro, featuring options like Cabinn Metro.
- Nørrebro: A trendy, multicultural neighborhood with budget-friendly hostels and good transport links.
- Vesterbro/Sydhavn: Areas with several budget options like a&o Copenhagen Sydhavn and Steel House Copenhagen.
