I am writing a series of letters to my grandchildren in advance of our trip to Denmark. Of course, they will be fascinated by the reign of King Christian IV, but I thought I'd spice it up a bit. So please tell me what were the worst , and best, things you had to eat while in Denmark. With recipes, if you have them. Thanks.
Depending on your taste, a platter of assorted herring. Some people would think this was awful, but we loved it.
For grandchildren one of the most important foods in Denmark is Danish softice.
It tastes really creamy and depending on the topping you will have a great sweet experience.
For experts: you can taste different producers of this ice cream and find out your favorite.
For adults "rødgrød med fløde" is a beloved desert. Fascinating that German Hamburg and Northern Germany have it as well as regional special desert (called Rote Grütze) whereas in other parts pf Germany it is rarely known.
By the way: Danish food - even standardized ones in closed packages - taste differently depending on where you eat them because taste is more or less flavored air or fluid and this is very different close to salty-air North Sea compared to Copenhagen. A good example for this is simple Appelsin Yoghurt from Kløver.
The famous Danish hotdog has also a lot of variant sausages and toppings which are worth to explore.
A learning for grandchildren is the responsible use of resources: the famous golden smoked herring of Bornholm is totally over-fished.
Also very special is the story of alcohol drink Akvavit, especially Linie-Akvavit.
We loved the different flavored herring.
Nothing in the “worst” category. I don’t like Herring but my son can eat it like potato chips. Smorgasbord restaurants in Copenhagen are a treat beyond description. 7-11 is a big chain in a number of countries including Denmark. Years ago we were with our then teenagers in Copenhagen who made a beeline for a 7-11 to get a slurpee!
Denmark is fascinating….
