Visiting Copenhagen

I’m planning a three weeks vacation flying to Lisbon spending two weeks in traveling in Portugal and flying out from Copenhagen back home. I have an extra week which I can divide between Brussels and Copenhagen or Amsterdam and Copenhagen.
I’m not sure if visiting two cities is rushing it or better to stay for the entire week in Copenhagen.

I appreciate any suggestion or input.

It's difficult for me to tell you whether to spend the whole week in Copenhagen or to go to Brussels or Amsterdam.
But if you decide to stay in Copenhagen, here are the places you can visit:
Hit up the free-town of Christiana. It's an old hippie settlement that still thrives. Soft drugs are locally legal (though actual police still enforces the country's laws), and I don't know what else to say - you won't find a place like it ANYWHERE else on Earth.

Walk around. Enjoy the local atmosphere. If you see anything that interests you, enter the store/museum/whatever and chat people up, even if they don't work there. A large majority of locals will know English very well, and be more than happy to have a chat.

Rent a bike. There are a bunch of countries in Europe known for its many bicyclists, Denmark being one of them. You shouldn't miss out on the feeling it is to bike around in a large capital city with bike lanes and stoplights specifically for bikes.

Go on a canal/harbor tour. There are a bunch of boat/ferry type ships that take people on tours around the harbor, and it definitely is something you don't want to miss. The mixed sensations of industrialization, socialism and historical architecture you get are just astounding.

Most museums you see will contain something interesting, even if it doesn't seem like it just from a glance at the building. If you are the museum-going type, you won't be disappointed.

Be sure to, at least for a few hours, leave actual Copenhagen. Since you have four days of time, that should be more than enough to catch any train that takes you 30-60 minutes out of the city. Denmark's metropolitan areas are very metropolitan, and its rural areas are very rural. Get on a train, ride until you are bored, enjoying the view from the windows, and then get off whenever you feel like it, enjoy the area, get on the next train back. It'll be a nice change.

Visit Sweden. There is a bridge from Copenhagen to Malmö, which means you can go there in minutes. If you've ever wanted to go to Sweden, this is a good opportunity. Be aware that the Malmö/Copenhagen border area has somewhat of a "mixed culture" that doesn't represent either Denmark or Sweden completely.

I can't think of any more things right now. Enjoy your stay!

Well, there is definitely enough to do in Copenhagen to fill a week, but Copenhagen plus another city is doable as long as you fly there. The train would take over 12 hours. My vote would be for 3-4 nights in Amsterdam and 3-4 nights in Copenhagen. I love Amsterdam and the airport there would probably have better flight options to/from Copenhagen.

If you go to Copenhagen, some must-sees in my opinion are Tivoli Gardens (especially after dark), Roskilde Cathedral and the Viking Museum, and the National Museum. I was in Copenhagen for 3 nights and while I wish I would have had more time, I loved what I saw. I write an online journal with photos and descriptions if you want to see some visuals. It is really a lovely city.

It sort of depends on what you're looking for and what you want to see and do. But in general there is no wrong answer, no matter what you go for you'll have a great trip.

fasouri, I went there as a solo female traveler and stayed in Vesterbro right near the train station and had no problems whatsoever. I was there for only 3 nights so it was very convenient for me, especially since one of my days there was by train to Roskilde. The hotel—Axel Guldsmeden—was right across the street and up a little. I found it to be a very good location.

We just returned from a fabulous visit to Copenhagen and took the Hans Christian Anderson walking tour with Richard. He arrives in his tall top hat and purple waist coat. It was a great 90 minutes.
