I plan to take the train round-trip from Copenhagen through Malmo to
Stockholm in mid-June 2026. I was led to believe (by Seat61.com plus
ChatGPT) that the discounted non-rebookable/non-refundable 2nd class
fare would be in the 300-600 SEK range (USD $30-60) but I'm seeing
fares 3x to 4x higher. Should I be waiting longer for cheaper prices
to be listed or is that really the pricing I should be expecting these
days? Perhaps my initial advice was bad...?
Also, the one departure time I really want from Copenhagen to
Stockholm is still showing as “track maintenance in planning", with no
prices listed yet. But all the other trains showing around it that are
already listed show fares of 1300-1800 SEK. If I wait for the
preferred train to be listed will it start with some lower fares
available or would I only be waiting and still end up with a 1300-1800
SEK fare anyway? (I hope that question was clear.) Thank you in
advance!
300-600 SEK was probably correct at the time of writing. There has been some general inflation since then maybe a bit of flight shame and some trains out of service. Even if the lowest price hasn't changed the average price is higher now.
SJ don't go to Copenhagen currently so they buy that from a third party, that adds 100-146 SEK to the ticket, with more on cheap tickets. Cheapest ticket Malmö-Stockholm is 245 SEK, with Copenhagen-Stockholm at 391 SEK, but they are much harder to find nowadays.
1300-1800 SEK seems a bit much. SJ shows the total price for your party, could that be the problem?
Sadly there are many uncertainties at the moment:
SJ is waiting for Danish approval for their upgraded trains, so there is still a chance for a few direct SJ Copenhagen-Stockholm in June. Likely departing 12:24 and 18:24.
Öresundståg runs Copenhagen-Malmö, they have released tickets until June 8, I would at least wait for them to release tickets to avoid a bus or a risky self connection with train.
Track works, usually such departures will have tickets released later (even if I experienced the opposite last week when my train in August disappeared). So probably worth to waiting for, with the risk of the other departures becoming more expensive, but with a big chance of some cheaper seats on a departure time that you like.
