Taking a train from Copenhagen to Stockholm

Hello, fellow travellers! My husband and I are planning our first holiday in Scandinavia. We will be spending the first week of July 2017 in Copenhagen and the following week in Stockholm.

I would prefer to take a train between the two cities rather than flying. I like the city-centre to city-centre convenience and in general I find European trains provide a relaxing sight-seeing opportunity during my holidays. My questions are as follows:

  1. Will we be able to take one train directly from Copenhagen to Stockholm?
  2. Which website would I use to book my tickets?
  3. I've heard that new ID rules for Scandinavian train travel were implemented last year. Has anyone had experience with that recently and how might it affect our plans?

Thanks, looking forward to hearing from the RS community!

You can book tickets and look up schedules at https://www.sj.se/en/home.html Note that, even on the English version of the site, the Copenhagen central train station is written as "Kobenhavn H." The Stockholm central train station is "Stockholm C."

It looks like there are currently a few trains a day scheduled to run directly from Copenhagen to Stockholm. According to the information here - http://www.seat61.com/sj2000.htm - passport checks are conducted in Copenhagen station before you leave.

If the direct trains don't fit your schedule, then you have to change trains twice: First, you take a local train to Copenhagen Airport where ID checks are done (because the airport is the last station in Denmark before crossing over to Sweden). Then, another local train to Malmo in Sweden, then a long-distance train to Stockholm. Though I haven't experienced the ID checks, I've ridden all of those trains, and my experience is that they make it easy for you to understand where to go. All the signs and announcements are repeated in English, and there are plenty of people around to answer questions.

When we were there last August, the security just looked at our ticket and our passport. Not a big deal. There are only 2 tracks - one going further into Denmark and the other track to Sweden.

We had more problems with our ticket from the Copenhagen airport to Stockholm. Our ticket time was not listed and we just took a train to Malmo then changed to a train to Stockholm. The "tv" screen listing the times only listed the destination and time, not a train #. The time on our ticket was not listed so we just took a train near our time. Luckily, when we asked at Malmo, we were on the right train. The train we were on stayed in the Malmo station for about 25 minutes then went on to Stockholm, right in the central area of Stockholm.
