I am trying to plan a 10 day trip to Denmark in July and August. I have been to several of these places, but my companions have not. How does this sound:
Days 1-4 Visit Copenhagen, taking a day trip to Roskilde.
Days 5-6 Odense
Days 7-9 Aeroskobing.
Days 10 Back to Copenhagen and prepare to fly out the next morning. My question: is there another place other than Copenhagen where we can spend our last evening and still have an easy drive to the airport?
You could switch things and go to Aeroskobing first, then back to Odense for
a couple of days, and then go straight to CPH from Odense. Two hour train
ride. I guess it depends on your flight schedule as to whether that's doable
or not.
From the itinerary you have, not quite sure why you need a car.
If you’re looking for a way to avoid Copenhagen, I’d suggest Roskilde, which is about 20 miles west of Copenhagen. Get there early enough, and you can visit the Viking Ship Museum, with five recovered real ships that sank centuries ago, and authentically built copies that take visitors out on the Fjord for a sailing excursion. Museum closes at 5:00 P.M.
Is there a special reason you are spending more time in Ærøskøbing than in Odense?
Ærøskøbing is nice, but small, while Odense is the third largest city in Denmark with much more to see and do.
In Rick Steves world, Aeroskobing is kind of the Cinque Terre of Denmark — meaning, a place he long has really, really hyped as a quaint “back door” in his guidebooks and TV show that is a recommended highlight of a visit to Denmark, and his Scandinavia tour goes there. But like Cinque Terre (although not yet nearly as overtouristed, I think), it’s more of a good examplar of a number of worthy destinations to be found in a country, than a place truly unique.
