Oresundstag Trains

Hello,

I bought train tickets via SJ.se from Copenhagen to Stockholm.

Leg 1 is on the Oresundstag from Copenhagen to Malmo with no assigned seat.
Leg 2 is on SJ from Malmo to Stockholm with assigned seats.

My question is, can we take an earlier Oresundstag with the type of ticket I have? It says replus on it. I saw from Oresundstag website that I can take a train +/- 3 hours, but since I didn't buy my ticket via Oresundstag website, I'm not sure if I can do that.

We have a 27 minute "layover" for transfer, and I know it's plenty time for most people. But I have kids who may want to buy food or use the restroom and walk slow, etc. So I just want to be safe. Thank you!!

Edit: Follow up questions - we would be leaving from Copenhagen osterport station around 7:30AM - is that considered commuter hours? Will it be very crowded on a Tuesday morning? And would a carry on luggage fit in the space under the seats or above the seats? I'm worried about leaving luggage in the carriage with the racks. Thank you!

Hello,

I think you can (or at least I think you used to be allowed to), but I don’t have the confidence to give you a response with 100% certainty. Riding without a valid ticket for the train you’re on can be a very expensive mistake, so it’s something you want to get right.

SJ’s website has a chat function (press the ‘help’ icon at the top). First it connects you with an AI, but if you tell the AI that it did not answer the question, it will transfer you to a human. That way you can get a quick reply to your question.

Getting stocked up on snacks is a good idea, but if you’re short on time in Malmö you can also do that upon departure from Copenhagen. SJ’s train also has a bistro onboard. Note that both Øresundståg and SJ’s trains have toilets onboard, which are free to use. You have to pay to use the ones at the stations.

Malmö C is an important hub, but the station itself is not massive on a European/global scale. 27 minutes is a lot more than most of us will need, so it will only become tight if you’re unlucky enough to run into more serious delays on the first leg of the journey.

The +/- 3 hours rules is valid from Copenhagen Central and the airport on Resplus tickets (but you lose your connection rights if you travel later). Stated (in Swedish) on page 4 here: https://samtrafiken.se/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/personal-resplus-biljetter-och-distribution-11.0-1.pdf

If you need SJ staff in Malmö they are often seen at SJ arrivals and departures and sometimes outside their lounge close to the exit to track 10.

I had a 22-minute delay this Tuesday and a few people were running to the Stockholm train so a bit more time can make it less stressful. Sometimes a train is cancelled and you would be down to 12 minutes. The Skånetrafiken app is good for updated info about cancellations and other problems between Copenhagen and Malmö. "Copenhagen central" is "Köpenhamn H" in Swedish, the rest of the app is in English but with automated translations of real time information.

Thank you for your insight. I was also worried about a delay as well. My starting point is Copenhagen Osterport station on a Tuesday morning! So hopefully no delay for us. I see from the samtrafiken website, it mentions we can travel at an earlier departure for local transport. I think we will try to hop on an earlier one! Thank you!

to answer my own question, we asked a staff member and yes was allowed to take an earlier oresundstag train. no problem either when our tickets got checked on board.

27 minutes would’ve been plenty time to make it to SJ train. but total moot point for us as our train was delayed by an hour and we had lots of time to kill at Malmo Station 😅
