Do I have to go through customs to connect from Amsterdam to Copenhagen.
Who is Olivia?
She is my grandaughter who is traveling for the first time from the US through Amsterdam airport to Copenhagen. She has this question and I didn’t understand how to ask a question on this forum. Sorry.
To answer your question, she will go through passport control in Amsterdam. Both the Netherlands and Denmark are part of the Schengen area and you go through immigration (passport control) in the first country that you pass through. She will go through customs when she arrives in Copenhagen. Unless she has something to declare, this is just a walk through the ”Nothing to Declare” lane.
By the way, you can edit the title of your post if you need to.
Thank you so much!
Laura gave an excellent answer.
Please understand, there are two parts......immigration/passport control and customs.
Immigration/passport control is for the person. Customs is for your stuff. (Some people combine the two and call it customs but it really is two separate things.)
If she is flying from the US, then she goes through passport control in Amsterdam. When she arrives in Copenhagen, it will be like a domestic flight in the US and she walks off the plane and on her way.
She will go through customs in Copenhagen. It's usually just a walk through unless she has something to declare. If she has checked luggage, and she is on one ticket, her bag will automatically be checked through to Copenhagen. She won't have to collect it in Amsterdam.
If she has checked luggage and it's two separate tickets, she will have to claim her bag in Amsterdam and walk through customs there. Then recheck it with her airline.
Very thorough response. Thank you
