Number of days in central Copenhagen

For some reason our Denmark itinerary has been difficult. We are considering staying in Koge and doing some day trips from there, then going to stay in central Copenhagen. Hopefully that makes sense. So the question becomes, how many days do we need to not feel rushed in central Copenhagen and see all the things?

We spent one day at Tivoli and one day walking around Copenhagen to see Nyhavn, Kastellet, Amelienberg, Christianhavn, and Rosenberg palace. We didn’t go into anywhere, but did climb the Our Savior tower! If you want to do museums or day trips, I’d add a few days.

It has been a few years since I have been in Copenhagen but I would say maybe 5 days at minimum.

And even then. I do not think you will be able to see and do all the things.

You really want to go to Tivoli Gardens and New Carlsburg Museum but there is so much more.

Thanks for the question. I hope one of the locals weighs in - I was unfamiliar with Køge, but see it recommended for a day trip out of Copenhagen. Looks charming. I hope someone with actual experience can give an opinion. Can't wait for my return to Denmark in 2026!

As for the original question - I agree with the above, 5 days would not be too short. "All the things" is hard to define - don't forget to consider the excellent Resistance Museum as well as all the fine art museums, National Museum, Tivoli, churches, castles, Nyhavn, on and on!

As for day trips, Copenhagen makes a great base - I would have to compare with Køge and transport ease obviously depends on where the day trip is headed. Out of Copenhagen, consider the Copenhagen Card that includes public transportation. It makes popular day trips such as to Kronborg Castle, Roskilde, Frilandsmuseet, Louisiana Art Museum, etc very easy. I don't know if Køge has a comparable option.

I also agree that 4-5 days would be good. I was there for 3 nights (about 2 1/2 days) a few years ago, and did not get to see a lot of places I wanted to. I did manage to get in Tivoli Gardens, Roskilde Cathedral (a must-see, imo), the Viking museum, the National Museum of Denmark, the changing of the guard at Amalienborg Palace, the Freedom (resistance) Museum and took a long walk down Strøget. But there was so much more I wanted to see and didn't have time.

If you can spare the time, I would definitely give it 5-6 nights. And if you go, I would also check into the Copenhagen card that ORDTraveler mentioned. I bought a 3-day one, and saved money. Not only does it cover entrance fees, but also public transportation, so I didn't have to pay for the train to and from Roskilde, or any of the others I used. Obviously, you should do the math but it really is a nice benefit for tourists there.

Thank you everyone! This is really helpful. We are considering Koge for a base for a few days as we can use hotel points there for a few free nights. One advantage of my husband traveling a lot for work. We will probably day trip from there to a lot of places. We want to spend some days in central Copenhagen to walk around, explore and go to the museums. There is so much on our list and I finally made peace this week that we won't be able to see absolutely everything. It is ok. We may go back another time.
