Night train type of sleeping car

I am planing to buy tickets for a night train from Stockholm to Molmo and cannot figure out the difference between compartments. I am trying to book about 50 days out and there only two options in compartment category. Both options are six birth compartments where one is "Private compartment" and the other is "Berth in couchette". They both have the same descriptions:

" Six-berth compartment. You make your bed with the pillow, pillowcase, sheet and blanket provided. Limited luggage stowage.
You travel in a six-berth compartment with three bunks on either side. The upper bunks are accessed via a ladder. You make your bed with the pillow, pillowcase, sheet and blanket provided in the compartment. The bunks measure 190 cm x 61 cm. WCs in the corridor. Limited luggage storage.
* Other operators may impose other rules
** Not applicable to all legs of the route However, the they different "

They are different in price thought.
I wonder if anybody know the difference?.

I have never taken a night train in that area, but I have done so several times in other countries, always opting for the cheapest option, which is the couchette. A couchette is the lowest level of sleeping arrangment. You are basically geeting a padded ledge once the car attendant switches the compartment over to the nighttime configuration. There will be no wash basin in the couchette compartment (which I think you might have in the higher-level compartment). The more expensive compartment may also be a bit larger, and I assume you have a bit more padding to sleep on.

If you go to Seat61.com, I bet you'll be able to find a photo of a Swedish sleeping compartment.

Gee, its only a 4 hour 23 minute train ride at other times. Why take a night train that takes 7 hours and 45 minutes, seems only to have 6-person couchettes, and has 4 stops in the middle of the night.

The booking page at www.sj.se has photos and other info for each choice - you just need to click to see more. Every higher option means more privacy, but not necessarily a more comfortable bed. So, similar to most night trains, you can choose to be one of up to 6 people in a shared couchette compartment, one of up to 3 people in a shared sleeper compartment, or to pay the highest rates for a "Private sleeping compartment" all to yourself in either 1st or 2nd class.

Did you also see this note about construction?

  • The Swedish Transport Administration will be working on the tracks south of Stockholm Central station from 25 June to 19 August, inclusive. Instead of Stockholm Central, south-bound trains will stop and depart from Stockholm Södra or Flemingsberg.

  • What does this mean for me? You will need to change to an SL commuter train to travel to or from Stockholm Central. The cost of the SL ticket is included in the price.

  • Do you already have an SL ticket? At the next stage, choose Stockholm Södra or Flemingsberg as your destination or starting point and use your SL ticket to complete your journey.

Where are you seeing this? on sj.se the descriptions are clearly different. Berth in couchette is a six person compartment, like the description you have posted. private compartment is for 1-4 persons, with ready made beds and a wash basin etc. in the compartment.
But as already posted, the journey is only 4.23 hours by day. Also note that Stockholm and Malmø are in Sweden, not in Denmark.

I tried to book first class for the night train on 10 of August. It has two options with different prices but with the same description which does not make sense. Anyway, we fly back on 11 in the morning so I changed my mind and we will get back toCopenhagen in the evening to be safe. Thank everybody for the input.

When I try to book a night train for the 10th of August on www.sj.se, I clearly get different descriptions for the different classes. Are you trying to book through a third party site?

I use sj website. I go with English. one way, train from Copenhagen central to Malmo, 2 adults and one child, August 10, night train,
next page: first class price 1170 next page: two choices: Private compartment 6 berth -1615( non-rebokable): Berth in the couchett 6 berth -1170 ( non-rebockable)

Both choices have the same description. What am I missing?

Your first post says you are traveling from Stockholm to Malmö and the last post states Copenhagen to Malmö. Which are you looking for. What date?

”Berth in couchette” means you will sleep in a shared 6 person couchette. If there are 3 of you, you will have 3 berths and other people will have 3 berths.

”Private compartment” means you will have the entire compartment. The price will generally be higher.

I speak Swedish. If you tell me what route and date you are traveling and the number in your group, I can check the Swedish site to see what the options are.

I checked from Stockholm Södra to Malmö on August 10 and I see 3 trains, all of which require 1 or 2 changes. Some have sleeping cars and some have couchettes.

Personally, I would not choose an overnight train because I cannot sleep on them and the day train is less than 5 hours.

Ok, I did the same booking (I assume you mean Stockholm, Sweden and not Copenhagen, Denmark) and I get the same result. There is a description elsewhere on the SJ website that you can book the remaining berths i. A compartment for a smaller fee. So I think it might mean that for 1615 kr you book the whole 6 berth compartment for the 3 of you.

Sorry it was from Stockholm not Copenhagen. Thank you for you explanation. I think you are right in explaining it. However, if you book 2 adults and 4 children ( they advise on the website to enter kid to have whole compartment,) you end up with private compartment 1615 and berth in couchette 2238. Considering that in either case you get whole compartment you explanation may not be good. Not having any better explanation I will take you explanation. Anyway, I bought tickets back from Stockholm on 10 of August evening train not a night train. Thanks for you time spend anyway. You want to grab a drink while we are there?
