May 2025 trip to Copenhagen and Norway

Hello. I am one of four men in reasonable shape in their mid-60's. We are planning to fly from NY to Copenhagen late May 2025. We have eight nights total. I am deciding between two options once there.

  1. Option One, Drive. After touring Copenhagen for several days rent a car and drive up to Gothenburg for one night, then Oslo area for three nights, (including North to Fjords) then drive back to Copenhagen for one more night.
  2. Option Two, fly- After touring Copenhagen for a few days Round Trip flight up to Oslo. Maybe rent a car in Oslo to tour North of Oslo to Fjords. (no stop in Gothenburg)

Which makes more sense? I do not have to rent a car in option 2 above-if you think we can use trains and public transit in Norway. I do not want to waste too much time in a car, but if driving up to Oslo from Copenhagen affords a lot of interesting stops, then it might be worth it?
Thanks!
Mike

Hi Mike, A big consideration in planning to drive to the fjords is whether the roads to the northern fjords you have in mind will be open. Snow and ice keep many of Norway’s mountain roads closed until June and this could impede your ability to easily get to where you want to go. The alternative routes to get to where you want to go can add hours to the drive and that can limit your choices.

  • Option three: Take the overnight boat from Copenhagen to Oslo.
  • Option four: Take the train from Copenhagen to Oslo with a stop in Gothenburg.

How do you define best? It really depends on what you're looking for and what you want to see and do. If you just want to get from Copenhagen to Oslo, the boat is a great option and saves you a night in a hotel. If you want to make stops along the way, the route via the Swedish West Coast makes sense. Gothenburg is a great city well worth a visit. If you should do it by car or train depends on what you're looking for. The train is faster but the car offers some flexibility. Although the car can be costly with tolls and congestion charges.

It seems that you underestimate the distances a little bit. I do not know how cosy these four guys are with another but your plan includes significant time sitting together in a car.

The driving from Copenhagen to Oslo is boring Swedish Autobahn (speed limit that is partly ignored by few Swedish drivers) with a few interesting stops, e. g. some castles, nice coastal villages, World Heritage Tanumhede and World of Volvo.

Not surprisingly I like options 3 and 4 by Badger; although I offer own ones.

Option Five: Fly into Oslo, do NiN train or one-way car rental (check price) to Bergen, sleep in Bergen from May 16-18 to join constitution day celebrations (really worth doing), flight to CPH, fly out from CPH.

Option Six: Fly into Bergen on May 16, Constitution Day in Bergen on 17th, car or NiN train to Oslo (stay), overnight ferry to Copenhagen, flyout from CPH.

You can turn this around like you want.

One car trip option between Oslo and Bergen was developed here in Norway forum.

Thank you all so much! I will investigate the new options. I did not even know about the overnight boat from Copenhagen to Oslo! This is all great information which will probably lead to more questions as I do the research. best, Mike

The train from Oslo to Bergen offers spectacular scenery, but book very early. Like as soon as they're available for purchase.

You should definitely look up the KBH-OSL overnight ferry. There seemed to be no end to the amount of travellers who expressed complete satisfaction and almost childlike joy as they went on it this summer and returned here to tell the tale. The train ride up to Gothenburg is scenic. It could be a fine choice, provided you go on a high-speed train.

Another vote for the overnight boat! It's a great experience and a smart way to make best use of time if wanting to travel from Copenhagen to Oslo.I would also suggest looking into the train (Norway in a Nutshell) options that go from Oslo to Bergen. It's a great way to see the fjords.

Hello and thank you all for this advice! I never added my actual travel dates- the flights have been booked due to a fare sale a few months ago. This is my draft itinerary, feel free to add your honest input ! Please keep this in mind when reviewing, I am more likely to be back in Copenhagen for full exploration in the next few years, but probably not Norway- so the Copenhagen portion is not as critical.

    • May 23rd arrive in Copenhagen at Noon
    • May 24th- depart Copenhagen on 3 PM overnight ferry to Oslo

    • May 29th Fly back to Copenhagen from Bergen
    • May 30th -Fly back to NY from Copenhagen
