London - Copenhagen by train

I just (Tuesday) came back from London by train inspired by The Man in Seat 61 but with a twist.

By staying the last night close to St Pancras and rising early (04:00), I was able to catch the

  • 06.16 Eurostar to Bruxelles
  • 09.20 Eurostar to Cologne/Köln
  • 12.15 DB to Hamburg
  • 16.55 DB to Copenhagen

Arriving at 22.02

Al these times ar scheduled. All the trains were delayed, but no more than the waiting time. I even had time to buy lunch in Köln and dinner in Hamburg. Nothing fancy just a sandwich or a roll I could eat on the platform or in the train.

Because I didn't quite trust DB to get me there, I didn't by the last ticket (Hamburg - Copenhagen) until we were a around one hour from Hamburg - Hurrah for DB App on the phone. If we had been too delayed I would have booked a hotel near Hamburg station and taken an early train next day.

Buying Köln - Hamburg separately from Hamburg - Copenhagen probably did cost you quite a bit extra. The way DBs prices work is highly degressive, and splitting tickets makes it a lot more expensive. So I would have bought a through ticket. After all, if you miss a connection due to a delay you can take the next train after all. And if that had been the next day DB would have had to pay for your hotel...

I'm surprised that Seat 61 doesn't mention this route, just a route with an overnight stop in Hamburg. It's also interesting that DB don't recognise this 12 minute connection at Bruxelles instead putting you on an 0704 train from London, arriving at Copenhagen at 0014 or 0050 with a later and stronger connection at Bruxelles.
Being able to get straight through in a day is much more attractive to me than an overnight stay in Hamburg.
