How much local currency in Frederikshavn, Denmark

Hi, i will be on a work trip to Frederikshavn for a week and i was wondering how much cash should i bring?

I be entering at Aalborg Airport and Train to Frederikshavn. Return via the same route.

I have heard and read that cash is not used much in Denmark.

If indeed cashless, Google Pay or physical card is needed when payment?

Can anyone advice please? Thanks.

Sorry - no experience in Frederikshavn, but Copenhagen, Odense, Helsingor, a couple other smaller towns - I used no cash at all Most recent visits were from 2016 - 2023.

I used both phone and Apple Pay.

Hopefully you will get Frederiskhavn specifics for assurance. I know I initially had trouble adjusting to the thought of no cash, but it worked for me!

Edit - I wrote the above before my morning caffeine. I should have indicated that I have used both physical credit card(s) and Apple Pay on my phone.

Already 10 years ago Denmark was among the highest numbers of card payments per inhabitant (source). No numbers about cashless but Scandinavian countries seems to be far ahead of other countries.

I assume that you will not have problems to pay everything cashless or minimum by card.

Please share your experience after the journey to help others.

We were in Copenhagen in early September. The only cash we used was to leave a tip for our hotel maid. EVERYWHERE (even the smallest independent stores and restaurants) took credit cards and it was assumed that’s what you would use for payment. Also saw people using Apple Pay on their phone.

We found the same was true in Finland, Estonia, Sweden and Norway.

I haven't been to Frederikshavn for many years, but I'm a local in Denmark and do get relatively much around the country in both cities and small towns.

I have not used cash in Denmark for years. Many years. Literally.

A lot of locals don't carry any cash. Having a store not accepting cash would be almost (if not absolutely) unheard of, as a large part of the potential customers wouldn't be able to shop there, since we don't bring cash around.

In the very unlikely event that you will need cash, there are ATMs in Frederikshavn. There's for example a KONTANTEN ATM in "downtown" Frederikshavn near the train station.

Bring a VISA card or MasterCard. Apple Pay or similar are also widely accepted, so maybe bring that too. Then you'll be good to go.

And just for information, tipping is not expected. I understand tipping in restaurants, and can do it (occasionally/rarely) for very good service. But being from Denmark, I must say that I find the concept of tipping housekeeping staff very strange.

Went to F-havn in July. Used card (and cash because I wanted to) in just the same way as in the rest of the country.

Went to Frederikshavn last year as part of two weeks in Denmark. We did not need any Danish currency the whole time we were in Denmark. We just used credit/debit cards - Visa and Mastercard - with no issues.
