How many extra days in Copenhagen?

We are taking the RS Scandinavia tour in late August and plan on flying back to Copenhagen to explore on our own before heading back to the US. I was thinking we would stay there an extra 3-5 days. We are interested in doing some tours (canal, bike & food) as well as additional sightseeing and shopping. Not sure if there are any day trips we should consider. Thanks in advance!

I would stay the five extra days to get a comprehensive tour of Copenhagen and the surrounding area. This would include day trips.

Five days sounds great!
You won't be jetlagged , so you can plan to see lots.
A trip by train to Roskilde is well worth it.
It's a lovely town , and has a fantastic Viking Museum and a beautiful Cathedral where all the kings and queens are buried.
Also, consider another trip by train to Helsingborg, to see the Castle and the wonderful Maritime Museum there.
Both trips take under two hours if I remember correctly.

I'm an art museum guy, so I'm sorry I missed the Louisiana Museum, on the northerly commuter train. We enjoyed the Copenhagen botanical garden. It was fun to see the non-verbal "Drones Prohibited" sign on the military base we walked past.

While I agree that Helsingborg is a charming town worth a visit, I feel that I have to point out that the maritime museum is in Helsingör, as well as the more impressive castle.

Badger: you are correct!
I didn't refer to my notes when I posted the above.
