Has anyone out there been there? I ran across a mention in the NY Times-featured as one of "52 Best Places to Go" for 2023. It looks like I can take a train from Copenhagen? I am doing a quick trip to Copenhagen and Oslo in the spring....I wonder if it will be worth a side trip. It looks like the museum has an interactive and hands on approach, whick I find intriguing.
I've never been to the museum myself, but Odense in general is a nice town well worth a visit. Easy to reach by train from Copenhagen.
Thanks so much!
I have heard that this museum is absolutely fantastic. i would love to go next time I am in Copenhagen.
I've also heard many good things about the museum, unfortunately I haven't been to Odense since before the pandemic so I haven't been able to visit it (yet).
I was in Odense in July, 2023. It is about a 90 minute easy train ride from Copenhagen.
We had researched upfront and decided that the Hans Christian Andersen House (museum) was not one we wished to see. The TripAdvisor Reviews were helpful in sorting this out. I agree, much of the literature and reviews such as you note made it seem a must-see, but after researching and weighing our interests, we skipped it.
That said - we loved Odense as a stop with a charming old city center and several other museums stops we loved. We spent two nights so had a full day and two partial days. We enjoyed Hans Christian Andersen's childhood home - very small and some reviews think over-priced, but to us, it explained much of the atmosphere of his stories. It takes about 5 minutes to see inside - 15 if you stretch things! Separate building and different location than the reviewed HCA House.
We took the Odense Aafart River boat to Funen Village, a living history museum. Tidens Samling is a small museum collection of Danish living rooms through the last century and Odense City Museum Møntergaarden was quite good and varied.
In short, everyone has different tastes. I'd look a little further into the HC Andersen House reviews to see some opinions, but you might be one who enjoys it. If you want a charming city center to stroll for a bit, Odense will fit the bill for that! The HC Andersen House Museum is right in city center as is everything above I mentioned with the exception of Funen Village.
Edit - Out of curiosity, I checked the most current reviews on TripAdvisor. They are overall more positive than the ones available to us when I was researching prior to our trip. If you want a variety of thoughts, check back through the 2022 reviews which influenced us.
We are going to Odense today and have tickets for HCA House tomorrow. I'l be back some time after that with my opinion :-)
Some years ago we visited the old HCA House and found it interesting. We also visited the Railway museum, which - honestly - was more interesting to me, but I am looking forward to the visit to HCA House tomorrow.
Please write up a review for us!!
One of the reasons we didn't go was that I get migraines from too much visual "stimulation" - I was afraid of catching moving images randomly from different angles and screens while moving through the rooms. it could be that my impression of the installation is wrong and it wouldn't be a problem for me.
I'm eager to hear what you think and if the audio problems the some complained of last year have been fixed.
We visited the HCA Museum yesterday.
IMO it has too much video and audio and too little solid written information. You get a headset which gives you audio sound based on your position. The visual is a mix of confusing lights and pictures and video and stretches with cool white walls and soothing lights.
I'm so old I prefer written information, I can digest in my own speed - rather than talk from many voices, some of them talking over each other.
I stand by my opinion that the Raiway Museum is more interesting: https://www.jernbanemuseet.dk/en/
Thanks so much for your review, l. p. enersen . I made the right decision, for me at least, to skip the HCA. Migraine territory, indeed! I was second guessing myself, I’ll relax now!
We visited the museum in August 2022 and really enjoyed it. You did have to buy timed entry tickets which may still be the case. We did not know that at the time so we had a bit of a wait to get in. During that wait we walked over to the house he grew up in which was very small and wouldn't be something I would go out of my way for. The museum itself we really enjoyed. We were given headsets which narrated our tour through the museum. We really thought the layout of the museum was cool, displays were unique and we learned a lot. I could see where the museum may not be for everyone as it has a kind of modern Danish design vibe but our family (2 adults, 2 teens) had a good time. And we enjoyed just walking around Odense too.
