FynBus - Nyborg Station to Svendborg Plads B - Visit to Ærø Island from Copenhagen

We are visiting Ærø Island, traveling from Copenhagen on Aug 9, 2023, and returning on Aug 11, 2023. I've already booked the train and ferry tickets. I'm now working on the bus tickets from Nyborg Station to Svendborg Plads B (and the return). When I look at buying the single tickets, the FynBus website (as well as the FynBus app) is giving me a time window, instead of a specific bus ride -- in our case 11:30 to 14:00. The specific bus we want to be on departs at 11:30 am and arrives at 12:16 pm (the next bus is 11:58 am - 12:46 pm). Does this mean I'm not buying a specific bus ride, instead I'm just buying a time window to be on the FynBus? If so, what if the bus ride I want does not have enough seating capacity? Sounds like we just queue up and hope we get on the bus we want. Our train arrives at Nyborg Station at 11:18 am. Our ferry leaves Svendborg Færgehavn at 1:05 pm. I guess we have enough of a time window that if we cannot get on the 11:30 am bus, we can queue up for the 11:58 pm bus.

Related to this, FynBus also offers a 24-hour Tourist Ticket during the time window we are there. The Tourist Ticket is actually less than the single ticket (DKK 50 vs DKK 76). So, if in fact I cannot buy a specific ticket for a specific bus ride, it seems I might as well buy the Tourist Ticket, which gives even more flexibility.

If you have experience with FynBus and/or getting to Ærø Island from Copenhagen via train/bus/ferry, your input and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Correct, it's just a regular public bus so you can't prebook a certain departure. Just like you can't prebook a certain departure on the Copenhagen metro. I would recommend trying to buy the ticket in advance, that sounds like more work than it's worth. Just buy the tickets when you arrive in Nyborg, either through the app or from the driver (cash only).

The tourist ticket can be a good option, but might also not be. It depends on how many you are and if there are any children in the group.

The risk that the bus will be full is very small. But if it is, you stand until enough people have left the bus. I would not worry about that.

Norwegians name a bus in which only every second seat is occupied as full. :-)
I do not know how it is with the Danes? Any insights, Badger?

That's a good question actually. The Danes tend in general to be a bit more continental in their habits than Swedes and Norwegians.

Thanks for the input and suggestions. For some reason, I was thinking FynBus would be like FlixBus, but now that we know it's a regular public bus, we will know what to expect.

We just traveled to Aero from Copenhagen, and it was very easy to get an advanced train ticket at reduced price from Copenhagen to Svendborg with an easy transfer in Odense. Has the advantage of seat reservation to Odense. No seat reservation available or needed for the train from Odense to Svendborg.

I second the train comment above.

We traveled via train from Copenhagen to Odenese (reserved seat) then hoped on a train to Svendborg. It was a an easy walk from the train in Svendborg to the ferry terminal. No bus is necessary in my opinion. In a few minutes we were at the dock.

You all are convincing me to go the "all train" approach. Probably easier to manage luggage on a train vs. a public bus as well. How much time did you need to do the transfer in Odense to the Svendborg train? The schedule I'm looking at gives us 8 minutes to get from the Intercity train to the Regional train (assuming everything is on time). We've been able to manage some tight connections when we traveled around Germany by train, so I'm thinking 8 minutes should be OK.

P.S. I learned from the Aero ferry operator that if we miss the connection and arrive late, we can change our ferry departure up to 30 minutes before departure with no change fees, and if we are unable to do that, they would still honor our booking for the next ferry departure anyway.
