Driving from CPH to Billund -- any place to stop along the way?

Hi! We arrive at CPH Sunday and will be renting a car and driving to Billund. We drive back on Weds to catch the ferry to Norway (but we'll be back in Copenhagen after that).

My question is, has anyone make the CPH/Billund trek? Any suggestions on where to stop along the way? We should be picking up our car around 12:30 and given the 3 hour drive, we'll have a little time to stop somewhere to either eat or look around. Also for the way back.

Thanks in advance!

If you are going back to Copenhagen later on your trip, then I'd save Roskilde for then. I would suggest stopping in Odense, which is home to the Hans Christian Andersen home and museum. It's just past halfway on your drive to Billund. Alternatively, consider Nyborg, the first town on the island of Funen when coming from Zealand/Copenhagen.

There are many places to stop on the way, all depending on your interests. Roskilde i'd skip for a day trip from Copenhagen and you don't actually pass it on the motorway to Billund.
Just of the motorway outside Slagelse in western Zealand is the viking fort Trelleborg http://en.natmus.dk/museums/trelleborg/ which could occupy you for a few hours.
Nyborg on Funen i would skip, since the town it's not that interesting apart from the old castle, which is a bit dissapointing as far as castles go.
Odense and Hans Christian Andersen house i quite nice for a few hours.
Jelling near Billund is famours for it's rune stones, which are considered the birth certificate of the Kingdom of Denmark. http://en.natmus.dk/museums/kongernes-jelling-home-of-the-viking-kings/
