Driving from Copenhagen to Hjørring (North Jutland): favorite stops along the way?

My wife and I will be driving from Copenhagen to a vacation cabin in Hjørring, North Jutland this coming Sunday (21 September).

We'll be picking up the car at 10 am from Sixt in the city center. We're both fairly experienced with driving in European cities—perhaps I'll write a trip report someday about the harrowing experience of returning a rental car in the Barcelona city center!—so not too concerned about that. (Also, we will need a car for our time in North Jutland so driving is a non-negotiable).

It looks like if we take the most direct route, we're looking at about a five hour trip. Since we can't even check into our cabin until 4 pm, we'd prefer to take a more leisurely drive, stopping along the way. We'll be retuning to Copenhagen by train (dropping the car in Aalborg), so this will be our chance to explore.

Has anyone done a similar drive, and have favorite sites along the way? We love natural beauty/animals/bird watching, quirky attractions, archeological relics, art, etc. We're open to extending the drive by a few hours, but would like to be settled in our place before around 6 pm (we plan to pick up groceries and stop for take out pizza at [Slice of Life][1]in Løkken on the way).

We'd also definitely like to stop for lunch—perhaps in Aarhus but very open to other, off the beaten track places. It looks like options will be limited since it's a Sunday, so perhaps we'll have to just go with whatever's open. I've done a lot of research, but would love any personal recommendations (no dietary restrictions, open to any cuisine, happy to spend money for great food but also have experienced some of the best food of my life from street vendors).

Thanks in advance for the insight of the forum!

These spots have been on my list for Denmark, but have not visited since we are usually on the train.

Egeskov Castle is supposed to be lovely and easiest to visit with a car. It looks like there is a nice cafe in the garden there.

I have heard that Middelfart is charming and is adjacent to a beautiful peninsula park and castle. Either of these could be a fun stop on your way across Fyn, depending on the weather.

When driving from Copenhagen to Hjørring you will more or less drive through the entire country. That means you will pass through a lot of places, that can be worth a visit. Will you be taking the route via the Great Belt Bridge or the Molslinjen ferry?

You could stop by the Jelling Stones (runic stones, Denmark’s ‘birth certificate’) and the accompanying museum. H. C. Andersen’s House in Odense. Stop at a ‘ringborg’ along the way, e.g. Fyrkat or Trelleborg (not to be confused with the Swedish town of the same name). For something smaller and with less tourist infrastructure, you could visit Kalø Castle (old castle ruin) or Portlandmosen (raised bog). And the list goes on…

Aarhus is a very nice city in my opinion, and of course you can have lunch there, but I’d recommend visiting either Aros, Den Gamle By and/or Moesgaard Museum when in Aarhus.
