Copenhagen with/without Copenhagen card

We will be doing a cruise this summer that starts and ends in Copenhagen and we plan to spend two full days in the city, one before and one after the cruise. Since most sights in Copenhagen are pretty pricey, I was thinking of getting a 24 hour Copenhagen card for one of the days and exploring without a pass on the other day. It looks like almost all the major sights are covered by the pass, but I'd love suggestions for sights that are not covered, or free, as well as recommendations for how to get the best value for the 24 hour card. (top 3 or 4 sights to hit in one day). We love palaces and history museums, as well as exploring interesting neighbourhoods and beautiful architecture.

I was also in Copenhagen for two full days (plus a little more), and I got the card for the entire time. I found out that it worked in my favor financially. I used it on public transit, including the train to Roskilde, and the sites I wanted to see. I wound up going to Roskilde Cathedral, the Viking Museum, Tivoli Gardens, the Freedom Museum and the National Museum. But I did the math ahead of time, which I would recommend to you.

Look at what is covered by the card, and then figure out the cost and see what's worth it. I don't remember the cost of everything, and I'm sure it's changed since I was there in 2022. You might try looking at Rick Steves' guidebook as he will have listings of the major sites, so you can see what interests you.

FWIW, I highly recommend Tivoli Gardens, the National Museum and Roskilde Cathedral. Those were my favorites of what I saw.

We would definitely be doing the 48 hour card if we were in the city for two consecutive days, but the cost for 2 separate 24 hour cards is quite a bit more. Our hotel for the one day is right near the rental car office and the central station, so we're hoping to do one day exploring on foot and one day at a faster pace with the city card.

Yes, Copenhagen Card cover most things.

  • Always free entry: Davids Samling, Møstings, The Tower (of Christiansborg, the parliament)
  • Free entry every Wednesday at: Museum of Copenhagen, Thorvaldsens Museum and Nikolaj Kunsthal, and after 17:00 at Kunsthal Charlottenborg
  • Free entry on the last Wednesday of every month: Glyptoteket

There are possibly more.

With those interests, you could also consider these not free things (likely included in the Copenhagen Card, but I haven't checked): Rosenborg, The National Museum, Museum of Danish Resistance, Designmuseum Danmark, Danish Architecture Center.

You can also follow the changing of the guard at Amalienborg at midday. Read more about it here. They leave from the barracks at 11:27. All happening in public space, free to watch and follow.
