My wife and I will be staying in Copenhagen for 4 nights in early June and want to know where to stay. We tend to like B&B's but they do not seem to be popular in Scandinavia. We like staying in the old town sections of the cities we visit and close enough to the main sites and public transportation. Any suggests are appreciated.
We stayed at the Ascot Hotel in 2016. We were actually in a suite in another building on the same street, but we had breakfast (included) in the main hotel, and were able to use their safe storage and such. Breakfasts were excellent, and the location was wonderful--not far from Tivoli Gardens, and walking distance to most of the historical sites.
Booking.com lists more than 400 B&B’s in Copenhagen. The central “Indre By” district is packed with many of Copenhagen’s top attractions including Tivoli Gardens, historic Rosenborg Castle, the Round Tower, the pedestrianized “Stroget” shopping street, City Hall and the historic port at Nyhavn, where Hans Christian Andersen lived. Be sure to take a canal tour because the boats will take you by Copenhagen’s acclaimed contemporary architecture on the waterfront including the Royal Opera House, the Royal Playhouse, and past the historic “Kasteliet” Star Fortress and ships at the Maritime museum And, of course, the boats pass by the Little Mermaid statue.
A 35-minute train ride to the ancient Danish capital of Roskilde with its Viking Ship Museum is worthwhile. Roskilde Cathedral is where all the Danish Kings are interred and it’s open to the public.
Back in Copenhagen, the National Museum has several Viking ships — including the largest one ever excavated— on display, along with archaeological artifacts such as Viking clothing.and gold jewelry.
We loved Villa Copenhagen! We found it to be clean and comfortable, and the food (especially the breakfast buffet) was some of the best we had during our trip. It does have a boutique hotel vibe. It is located next to Copenhagen's Central Train Station and diagonal to Tivoli Gardens. We could see fireworks from Tivoli from our room one evening. Our room also had a view of the small rooftop pool. You need to reserve a time to use the pool, which I thought at first was odd, but once there, I really appreciated how they managed the space so a small pool and bar area doesn't feel crowded. Also, we had air conditioning in our rooms, which is a rarity in any of the Nordic countries. It might seem like a small thing, but while we were there, they were having a heat wave!
We'll be there as a family of four in late November. Dutch friends of ours recommended the Canal House (https://kanalhusetcph.com/en/forside-english/) as a lovely option. They were delighted with their stay there - traditional Danish vibe and not touristy, breakfast, and location. Much more expensive than the hostel we had to resort to, unfortunately they did not have room for the four of us for the necessary dates. Good luck and have fun!
Thanks all for the suggestions. Always great to hear the opinions of fellow travelers, rather than from the tour books.
