Copenhagen to Malmo by train

I want to take a trip to Malmo from Copenhagen by train on June 18th, Wednesday. The person at the airbnb that we staying said we could go from the Norresport station to Malmo, but I cannot find tickets leaving from there. I checked Rome to Rio and it sent me to Omio, which I was told by several people here not to use. At any rate, even there, it says not available; only flixbus tickets available. Is the only way to get to Malmo from Copenhagen from the central station? Do I need to buy tickets in advance? Thanks for the help in advance.

If that is the case then Rome to Rio/Omio doesn't have all the facts and relevant information. It is (almost) always advisable to cut out the middle man and buy directly from the operator/transport agency in charge. In this situation, that is Skånetrafiken. I'd recommend their app.

I (and others) have attempted an answer the other questions you are asking on the other thread you made on the topic. Maybe I'm not catching if there is something else you want us to clarify?

Btw I recommend checking out Lund too/instead of Malmö, as Lund is considered to have more charm.

Hello broccolihaar, the all knowing person that you are! Yes, I had asked about trains to Odense from Copenhagen. I took your advice and I did get train tickets (orange ones at that). Now, I thought it would be simple to get more tickets from DSB for Malmo, but there is nothing there. I will try the other site you suggested. How much further is Lund vs Malmo? Believe me, I cannot thank you and all those on this website that "like magic" seem to know all the answers and know exactly what I am looking for.

Great to hear! Hope you'll get a good and smooth holiday.

I undestand the confusion. DSB isn't in charge of these trains, they are run only by the Swedes (and thus Skånetrafiken is in charge).

No benefit to booking ahead on the Copenhagen-Malmö-Lund route. Just buy and activate the ticket when you need to go. No seat reservations either. Lund is just 10-15 minutes further. If you get a 24 hour ticket Copenhagen-Lund, you can also get off in Malmö on the same ticket (available in Skånetrafiken's app).

Again, broccolihaar, a million thanks. So what I understand from you is I can buy a ticket for Malmo and Lund at Norresport. If I get the 24 hour ticket to Lund, I can go from Copenhagen to Malmo to Lund and back to Copenhagen and I don't have to get an advance ticket. Do I have that right?

You're welcome.

Almost correct.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think Skånetrafiken have ticket machines at Nørreport (but they do at Copenhagen Central Station).

DSB's ticket machines at Nørreport can sell you a ticket to Malmø or Lund, but they don't have the 24 hour option and their group/family discount structure is different. So I'd recommend using Skånetrafiken's app if possible.

You can use Omio. The reason people say not to is because it's a third party ticketing site and people here believe that buying third party is always significantly more expensive than buying straight from the vendor, but that isn't true. Certainly a good idea to compare prices but there's no safety reason not to use Omio, it's fine. That being said, like commenter above said, no need to buy tickets to Malmo ahead of time.

Thank you C and broccolihaar for the information and advice. I always trust these forums and I have never been steered in the wrong direction. C-I will check the prices at Omio and broccolihaar, I will check the price differences. Thanks a million times over!

It's true that comparing prices won't hurt anyone. Omio may be competitive on price in other countries, but I have never seen Omio be cheaper than DSB on domestic journeys in Denmark and cheaper than Skånetrafiken when crossing Øresund with them.

Copenhagen-Odense:

  • DSB: 329 DKK fixed maximum fare. 25% discount for youth and seniors. "Orange" tickets from 89 DKK. Optional seat reservation 30 DKK.

  • Omio: 399 DKK fixed fare. No youth/senior discounts. No "Orange" tickets. Seemingly does not offer seat reservations.

Copenhagen-Malmö:

  • Skånetrafiken: 150 SEK. 24 hour ticket option. 20% discounts when two or more people travel together.

  • Omio: 158 SEK. No discounts for travelling together. No 24 hour ticket option.

broccolihaar strikes again! I haven't even had time to go back and compare prices! LOL! Thank you AGAIN for even doing that for me! It's skanetrafiken for me! A million thanks for your help and time!

Hello again broccolihaar-I went to the Skånetrafiken app to buy the 24 hour ticket. The funny thing is if you leave from Norresport instead of the central station, the price doubles! What a bummer. At any rate, to pay, they say to use a debit card, do they mean credit card?
Also, I read somewhere on the internet if you buy a 24 hour ticket in May, it can not be used in June. I am thinking I should just take your advice and buy the ticket in the app when I get there . . .
Again, I always appreciate your help and insight.

Hello!

The price doubling sounds like an error somewhere. Not sure what's happening on your end, but Nørreport and Copenhagen Central Station are in the same fare zone, so prices should be the same.

When I look, a 24 hour ticket from Copenhagen to Malmö is 300 SEK / to Lund is 360 SEK (before potential group discount).

Not sure what the rules are about buying this early. But prices are fixed and tickets are sold in unlimited quantities, meaning they literally can't sell out. So I'd still just wait, you can buy the ticket shortly before departure and be fine.

I agree, you can just wait. June is far away and there is no advantage in buying the tickets early.

I also agree that Lund is a better place to visit, it is a more charming town than Malmö. I also like Helsingborg, and if you're looking for small town charm close to Copenhagen you can also consider Ystad or Simrishamn.

Hello broccolihaar and Badger-I looked up Lund and you are both correct! It does look much nicer and I will go there (any suggestions on "must sees" there, other than just looking around?). My question is: if you you get a 24 hour ticket to Malmo can you go to Lund because that would be cheaper or do you have to buy a ticket to Lund, a bit more expensive, then you can go back to Malmo before going back to Copenhagen?
BTW, broccolihaar, Just for grins and giggles, I went back to the Skånetrafiken site and put in the same information and I got the same price again for going to Malmo from Copenhagen. As I mentioned before, I am going to wait until I get to Copenhagen before I buy my ticket, but I just wanted to see if I would get a different answer this time-it wasn't. I just hope I don't have any issues getting tickets because that is the only day I can go there.
Badger-thanks for the other suggestions, but I don't think I'll have time to go to Ystad or Simrishamn.
I think the next time I go on a trip, I should come on this website for suggestions before I even plan a trip. Everyone here is so helpful and makes such wonderful suggestions. You guys have no idea how much it is appreciated!

Hello again,

I haven't spend enough time in Lund to call myself an expert - maybe I should take a day there again soon. Anyway, Lund has a good variety of things to see and do. As you say, looking around is a part of it. I can also mention the cathedral as a key place to work into your sightseeing. As with many things in life, it depends on interests, and Visit Lund has some inspiration to help you find out what to spend your time on while in Lund.

No, a Copenhagen-Malmö ticket is not valid to Lund, as Lund is further away from Copenhagen than Malmö is. That's also why the ticket to Lund cost a little more. But if you buy a 24 hour ticket Copenhagen-Lund, you are free to hop off the train in Malmö on your way to/from Lund and back on the train again later (during the 24 hour validity, of course). The price for that ticket should be 360 SEK for one adult.

Thank you-AGAIN, broccolihaar! How did you get so smart. You seem to know everything!
