I will be staying in Copenhagen for 2 nights in mid June 2026 and have been searching hotels. Prices have been in DKK. I am, therefore, wondering if the currency is Danish Kroner rather than Euros? Also, any suggestions for hotels between the city center and the harbor area where cruises depart would be appreciated. Thanks!
Denmark has an opt-out from the EU which allows them to retain their currency. If you are paying for the hotel with a credit card, you will get the best exchange rate by telling them to process your purchase in Kroner. The credit card network is quite able to handle that. Do not do any transactions in Euros or dollars.
I haven't been to Denmark lately, but most internationally focused websites have a menu option near the top of the page to select "Show Prices In XXX ". (I don't book on third-party sites that much, so I don't know about Hotels dot com.)
Yes, although the euro extends to new countries every so often, it’s still a currency patchwork in Europe. Seven of the 27 EU countries use their own currency instead of the euro for various reasons, including Denmark (and Sweden). Then there are the non—EU countries with their own currency, such as Norway, Switzerland, UK. And conversely, non-EU countries that use euro, either by agreement with EU (microstates such as Vatican, Monaco, Andorra), or just by unilateral decision (Kosovo, Montenegro).
Currency is DKK with a somehow fixed exchange rate DKK to EUR which gives a lot of stability.
The Norwegian currency NOK is not fixed to the Euro; hence the prices have another factor.
As others have said Denmark does not use the euro, we use the Danish krone. Denmark is actually the only (remaining) EU country that has an opt-out the monetary union, meaning it’s the only EU country that does not have to adopt the euro eventually.
The Port of Copenhagen spans through the entire city. Cruise ships dock at Oceankaj (used by most/all cruises originating at Copenhagen I think?), Langelinie and Nordre Toldbod. They are far from each other, so it's a good idea to confirm which you need to go to, e.g. on Copenhagen Malmö Port’s website.
As a local I don't have first hand experience to recommend a hotel. But don’t feel like you need limit yourself to a hotel between the city centre and the cruise quay. Copenhagen is not that big and the transportation system (no matter if you choose public transport or taxi) will get you there with relative ease.
