I am going to Denmark in May and will be buying the Copenhagen card. I will also be traveling by both train and Metro. I went online to the recommended Danish rail site to determine the day and time of departure I need for my sightseeing. Can I use my Copenhagen card on line to make the reservation or do I need to go to the station to get the ticket? I am buying the card to save on transportation.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Where are you going?
The trains are public transport. Just like taking the metro or local bus, you don’t need to make a reservation on the trains. You just need a valid ticket to ride (such as the Copenhagen Card Discover).
On IC trains it’s generally a good idea to get a seat reservation, but you rarely use those to get around the Copenhagen area, where the rail system is mainly served by S-trains and regional trains where seat reservations are not offered.
I was in Copenhagen September 2024. If I remember correctly, you DONT need to get separate train ticket or metro.
Make sure you get the Discovery card that includes transportation. If you download on phone, just have the QR code ready to show if asked. The app/card will have 2 codes. One for transportation and a separate for sightseeing.
No need to tap in and out on metro. And no need for separate train ticket. But inspectors may ask you to show proof of ticket. They asked for someone next to me on the metro.
I don’t think you need to reserve a seat for train. I just hopped on trains to Hillerod and Helsignor. Ticket inspector came around and I just pulled it up on screen. Just make sure you know ahead if card will cover your desired destination.
Tivoli was next to my hotel so I made a stop there daily. Free entry with the card. But if you go early in day and want to return later, they will stamp your hand. The card code only works once a day per attraction. Can use unlimited on transport.
I am going to Louisiana Museum, Karen Blixen House, Aarhus, Arken and Brondboyster.
OP - Aarhus is not covered by card - too far I believe.
I think Brondby is also not covered.
I remember the Copenhagen Card website was very helpful when I was deciding if it would make sense for me to buy it vs separate tickets. I suggest you take a closer look for comparison.
Thank you everyone for the help.
Louisiana, Rungstedlund (Karen Blixen), Arken and Brøndbyøster are all well within the coverage area of the Copenhagen Card. No further reservations required when you have a Copenhagen Card Discover.
Aarhus, on the other hand, is far outside the coverage area of the Copenhagen Card. For this journey you’ll need a separate ticket, which I advise to buy on dsb.dk or in DSB’s app. It's recommendable to buy a (optional) seat reservation in additional to the ticket for this journey.
