Copenhagen-Algutsrum-Stockholm

Hi all. Planning trip in late May to the small town where my family is from - Algutsrum, in Oland in Sweden. Tentative itinerary:

Copenhagen 3-4 nights
Algutsrum 3 nights
Stockholm 3-4 nights

Questions we have are about transportation, since we’re going to need a car in Algutsrum. Thoughts?

We can rent car in Copenhagen, drive to Algutsrum and return car in Stockholm. Or train to Kalmar, rent car there, use in Algutsrum, return car in Kalmar and train to Stockholm. Or a combination - train to Kalmar, rent car, drive to Stockholm and return car.

Thoughts?

Also, can you rent a car in Denmark and return it to Sweden?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I have never rented a car in Europe, but from all I've read on this forum, you will incur a huge drop charge if you rent a car in Denmark and drop it off in Sweden. You should definitely pick up the car in Sweden. I can't comment specifically on the logistics of picking up in Kalmar or dropping off in Stockholm, but Kalmar's not a terribly large or busy place. Stockholm, on the other hand... There are trains from Kalmar to Stockholm that might be a better option for covering that ground.

Take the train from Copenhagen to Kalmar, rent a car there. Then return the car in Kalmar and take the train from Kalmar to Stockholm. On the latter trip you have two options, with a change in Alvesta or a change in Linköping, my recommendation is to change in Linköping, that is a more scenic route in my opinion, even if it's usually a tad slower. Assuming you actually need a car, Algutsrum is easy to reach by bus. And calling Algutsrum a town is a very generous use of the word.

(And since this is a question mostly about Sweden, it would have been better to ask it in the Sweden forum.)
