clothing choices

Hi,

Curious about my clothing choices for Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland - I am from Northern California. Would it be appropriate to wear a shirt with a warriors emblem or giants emblem? I don't want to get called out being from the US and I certainly don't want to draw attention to ourselves. thoughts?

First, the Scandinavians will probably know your American anyway, but to answer your question, it depends on whether you are talking about a blue polo shirt with a small patch on the sleeve or chest worn on the street or an orange baseball jersey worn inside a church or nice restaurant. Wear the clothes you like to wear and feel are appropriate to the situation, just like you would at home.

If you don’t want to wear clothes that “draw attention” then I’d go with a shirt that doesn’t do that.
Most shirts with sports team logos are designed to draw attention.

I recommend to wear neutral shirts.

Although Danish people are open for sport dresses such as team jerseys if you attend sport events or matches; at other occasions Danes are very decent in wearing large brand emblems or even flags of other nations on dresses in public.

Background: the Danish flag (Dannebrog) is often seen at buildings and also at private homes but flying the flags of foreign countries is prohibited by law in Denmark. Only exception is for the German minority in South Jutland.

MarkK's comment about flying flags surprised me. So I did a little research. To a point he is correct, but its a bit more forgiving and does allow a few other flags. Cant see where it would be an issue on clothing by what I have read; "However, the law only refers to flags flown from flagpoles, not flags displayed in any other way...". I love one specific national exemption to the law. G-d Bless Them.

The permitted National flags that can be flown on a pole are: Ukraine, Greenland, The Faroe Islands, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Germany; but not South Jutland or Texas. "The law also bans flags that are the equivalent of national flags, such as the Palestinian flag."

Organization flags like the EU and the UN and NATO are permitted as are corporate and Aggie flags. The ban is only on National flags.

https://lwid.dk/the-brief-story-of-legally-flying-national-flags-in-denmark/ is my only source and the internet can be amazingly unreliable so this might be no more correct than MarkK.

But thank you MarkK, I live and learn. One of the reasons I love the forum. Facinating.

The actual law can be found online: https://www.retsinformation.dk/eli/lta/2024/1449

In short:

  • It's illegal to fly the flag of other countries (and comparable entities).
  • The ban does not apply to the flags of Finland, Faroe islands, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Germany.
  • The ban does not apply to the parliament and diplomatic missions.
  • The minister of justice has the power to exempt other flags from the ban (which is currently the case with the Ukrainian flag).

Regarding the original question, I'd say that it depends a bit on what the shirt looks like. I guess warriors and giants are sports teams? If the emblems are small and discrete, few people will notice. But if they are big and tacky, you will stand out like a giraffe. People wearing sports team clothes is not that uncommon, but mostly on game days. Here is a video from Stockholm that will give you an overview on how people dress: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjXuQNvakro

Great video! It went right by Hotel Frantz where we stayed two years ago. They had the best breakfast spread of any hotel I have ever stayed.

Just keep in mind that it shows some of the most touristy parts of Stockholm. So while it does show you how the locals dress, it also shows you how the tourists dress.
