Simple question because all of the castles and palaces look pretty similar in Denmark. What would you rank the major castles and palaces in Denmark? Can be based on any criteria that you can think of whether it be historical, conveniences, or personal favorites.
The Frederiksborg Slot in Hillerod is an amazing renaissance castle. The Carl Bloch paintings are housed there and also the museum of national history. If you go a little farther north you can visit Krongbog slot. It is considered the "Hamlet castle" and you can see Holger Danske who is sleeping until needed to protect his homeland. It is also a renaissance castle. These castles are easily accessible by public transit.
Just a few from my memory of when i lived there over 30 years ago. We are headed back this summer and i will take my husband to these two for sure.
Honestly: Who has seen / knows "all of the castles and palaces" in Denmark? Btw: 181 castles and manor houses are listed only on VisitDenmark.
Just check the ones near to your planned route and choose one. See for example this article "12 castles you should visit in Denmark".
It is considered the "Hamlet castle"
It's not just "considered" the Hamlet castle. It is the castle where the play is set.
Our family found the Rosenborg Castle in Denmark kind of underwhelming and wished maybe we had spent that time differently.
Not to be argumentative, but I found Rosenborg Castle fascinating. Crown jewels and historical settings. On the other hand, I have heard from friends that they thought Rosenborg was “too dark” and not to their “taste”. Point is, travelers should take their own preferences into consideration when planning.
As to the OP, in my experience in multiple visits, no, castles and palaces I have visited are not similar throughout Denmark. Many different points of emphasis in exhibits and timelines emphasized. I have found that having some knowledge of Danish history brings more to the visits. (Markk’s point is also well taken)
