Car rental from Copenhagen

We will be coming to Denmark in late August. After a week in Copenhagen, we are travelling to the Billund area and then north Jutland. We want to rent a car once we leave Copenhagen, but wondering if we are better off to rent in Copenhagen and drive from there, or take the train out of Copenhagen and rent a car from somewhere like Odense? Not sure how challenging it is to drive in Copenhagen itself.

If you just want to drive out of Copenhagen, it is no big deal. There is big city traffic, but nowhere near what you see in London.

Are you visiting places between Copenhagen and Billund? If not, I would rent a car after I got to Jutland. The motorway is not very interesting and personally I only go by car if I need it on arrival.

But then I would never take the car to Copenhagen. YMMV.

I agree that renting a car on Jutland sounds like a better idea. Saves you a boring drive and a large bridge toll.

I understand the idea of not renting a car for Copenhagen; but renting in Copenhagen to start a car round trip sounds like a good idea to me because you can explore a little bit of the country depending on interests.

Copenhagen is not very challenging, the countryside is very easy going. Most Danes drive carefully and according to regulations. High fines.

Be careful when driving into villages. Some have installed aggressive bumps to force drivers reducing speed. Others have installed speed meters which display the measured speed of your car. Language fun: those displays are undertiteld with "din fart". What they mean is speed. ;-)

We rented a car in Roskilde to continue west from Copenhagen. We decided to drive rather than train to Jutland because there were places along the way where we wanted to stop. We dropped the car at the Billund airport for an onward flight, so you could consider just a one way rental if that sounds more appealing with your plans and places you are interested in stopping.

And keep in mind that Denmark uses implied speed limits.

And keep in mind that Denmark uses implied speed limits.

Our rental car in Denmark displayed the speed limit of the road we were on, so it was straight forward to obey speed limits. We didn't request this feature, so I don't know how common it is. (We drive older cars in the US; we'd rather spend our money on a trip than a new car.)

Be aware that this is not 100% reliable and will NOT be an excuse if you are caught speeding.
