Beyond Copenhagen

My husband are traveling to Europe from Oregon in June. The last 8 days of our trip will be spent in Denmark. This is our second time to Denmark. 3 years ago we spent 4 days in Copenhagen, only venturing out as far as Dragor.

This time we have plans to visit Malmo, Aero, and Aarhus. We are thinking a day trip to Malmo from Copenhagen, 2 nights in Aero and 2 nights in Aarhus; the remainder of our time would be in Copenhagen. We are wondering if either Aero or Aarhus warrants an additional night? We are okay with just a day or two in Copenhagen since we have been there previously. I would love to hear peoples thoughts about the time in these places as well as if there is another must-see location we have missed.

I can't recall that anyone on this forum has really made a case for visiting the city of Malmo. To or from Aero and Aarhus, I'd rather include a stop at Roskilde for the Viking Ship Museum and Royal Cathedral. Other attractive day trips from Copenhagen could be north to Frederiksborg Castle — the "Danish Versailles" — in Hillerød, the Louisiana Art Museum in Humlebæk, and Kronborg Castle in Helsingør.

I spent an enjoyable afternoon in Malmo last year. Whether it's worth a trip from Copenhagen depends what you're interested in. For me, I like spending some time exploring neighborhoods, looking at interesting buildings and shops, and watching people go about their daily life, and I found Malmo to be well worth a few hours (and refreshingly free of the hordes of tourists who treat Europe like a continent-sized amusement park). If you're looking for museums, castles, and high cultural experiences, you're better off elsewhere.

A couple of things to keep in mind if you go:

  • Sweden and Denmark have different currencies. For a short day trip, you can probably get by using credit cards for all your Swedish purchases. Some of the public restrooms require coins, but the downtown shopping centers have restrooms you can use for free.

  • If any part of the appeal of Malmo is in the trip over the Oresund bridge, be aware that the Oresundstag trains travel on the lower level of the bridge, which means you can't see much of the bridge itself. For a better view, you could take a bus across the bridge. There are several bus companies that make the trip, outlined here: https://www.routesnorth.com/things-to-do-in-sweden/getting-from-copenhagen-to-malmo/

Donna: Like you and your husband, we visited Copenhagen a few years ago for 3 days. We're returning in May (this time via a cruise ship stop for a half day and another full day). We had planned to go to Malmo this visit and we were planning on getting there via boat. When we learned there is no longer the boat service to Malmo and learned the train is on a lower deck of the bridge, we deleted Malmo, but that's just us. As noted in earlier recommendations on the thread, we're planning a day trip to upper Zealand and several of the stops noted in that region. You posted " 8 days [total] . . . 2 nights in Aero and 2 nights in Aarhaus. . .[and you are] okay with just a day or two in Copenhagen" You might want to consider upper Zealand, perhaps including the ferry to Helsinborg.
