We have a trip planned to Denmark for this September and are a little concerned how the Danes feel about people coming to visit whose government is behaving as o.iurs is. Has anyone been there lately and had any experiences? I know there are several people from Denmark on this forum and would appreciate hearing from them. Thank you so much!
I am not American, but I do live in Denmark. And I understand your concern, but as long as you are a normal, sensible and respectful human I don't think you have to worry.
My lighthearted (but also real) advise would be:
- If you own a MAGA hat or similar merchandise, just leave it at home for now
- Don't make any public comments about annexing or purchasing Greenland
- Don't be loudly patriotic, e.g. by walk around chanting "U-S-A, U-S-A" due to the current political events
I think an important point is that Danish people are no strangers to disagreeing with their/our government. So we won't automatically assume you support everything the US administration does, just because you happen to be American. Just to give you some context of the current state of things here: At the general election in 2022, the 3 parties that now form our government got a combined 50.1% of the votes. In the latest poll, they only got 36.1%. But our prime minister have also called the current Danish government for a "weird government" - and in many way it is, but that is a story for another day.
But of course, nobody knows how the crisis will develop and how attitudes may change as a result of that in the future. I think we all hope for a de-escalation on this side of the pond. However as things are today, I don't think you will have any issues visiting Denmark as an American.
Thank you so much! No danger as we Do Not own any MAGA merchandise. Our son in law lived in Denmark during his senior year in high school and visits his Danish family as often as he can. We appreciate your taking time to respond. Looking forward to seeing and experiencing Copenhagen and Odense. Were also hoping our government realizes how much we all need each other.
Article "European favourability of the USA falls" shows numbers on the opinions. I guess that the numbers since publishing did not improve.
You are right to consider such things in general, as the situation changes by the minute. This means that nobody is fully qualified to assess either current or future developments. It would take a crystal ball and a really reliable fortune teller. The proposed conquest of Greenland puts this specific European country in a unique and difficult position. The Danes are generally very easy going though.
I think we will take the situation one day at a time. Delta has told us we can change our reservations up to the week before we leave in September. We are going to Germany in May and June and visiting family. Maybe we'll get a better feel for how other countries citizens react to us visiting. My son in law contacted his family who told him that they think the Danes realize we are not all responsible for our countrys actions.
Respecting all individual experiences and opinions here from other parts of Europe I like to share my impression of Scandinavians from multiple contacts (travels and friends) that they are very decent people. Most of them have strong opinions but would never confront you with an offense statement (except you in person did something wrong).
As a German traveling in Europe was not always easy and partly still is not - based on experiences that ancestors of people made with Germans during WWII. Although Germans did things that were absolutely cruel and unacceptable, e. g, during operations Weserübung and Nordlicht ('44), I was never offended in a personal way by one Scandinavian. If they had any bad opinions about me, they were never communicated verbally. Also not in business.
Be aware of and open for a possibly very different culture because a few Scandinavian people (compared to world population) reached a lot by standing and working together in this sometimes opponent nature and against sometimes unfriendly neighbors.
As a rule of thumb - and this starts geographically from German Bremen, Hamburg and Schwerin northwards: the more they speak with you (not listening only) the more the interpersonal relation is intact. This needs time in the Nordics but is more reliable than in other parts of Europe.
Thank you for your insight, MarkK.
I don't know that it's about how they treat us but about us being ashamed to show our faces there.
I just got back from Iceland and Scotland two days ago. No Problem.
Next Tuesday I return to Europe and over the next few months I'll be visiting eight more European countries. I'm not worried.
I am currently planning a trip to Greenland this summer. After seeing protests against the US consulate there, I contacted someone I know online who lives in Greenland and asked about how Americans are being treated. She said I'll have no problem. They are welcoming American tourists and look forward to many this summer with direct flights from Newark. She said it's the US government the people are not happy with, not the visitors.
BACKGROUND
There is a lot of truth in what is being said about Scandinavia here. Broccolihaar has given all the advice you are likely to ever need. MarkK mostly has the same impression of us Scandinavians that I have myself. We are almost as reserved as the Brits and the Japanese.
My own country however, has an abundance or uncertainties at present, on every level and in every area. This last decade, everything is in flux (an unending list), whereas in for example Finland they still know how to run a country. My Finnish neighbour just shook his head last week and stated; "Nothing works". I knew exactly what he meant. He will be moving back to Finland this summer. Our reawakened nationalism and our inherent Russophobia, which for historical reasons, and compounded by several current situations in international politics, in full bloom in recent years, has caused a psychic restiveness, which is palpable in daily life if you are a native. Denmark has a very different experience when it comes to standing up to autocrats over the last century. They did just that, while we chose to, how shall I put this delicate matter... tread a different path, according to the history books. Details could be given, and I could of course tell you exactly what I, and others, think about all these developments, for a more full understanding of this part of the world, and a more complete reply to your query, but I doubt if that is allowed and I don't want to cause you to be robbed of all the knowledge that others have contributed.
POSSIBLE RISKS
Your query concerns possible negative experiences/risks while travelling in Northern Europe. From the general background provided above, a tentative assessment can be formed. At first glance I can only see two possible situations that could ever constitute a real risk (as opposed to verbal insults) if they ever occurred. One is the teen gang out and about in the company of several bottles of alcohol on a Friday night. An American man (not a woman) approaches them and starts boasting about... current US policies and politics, and a fight breaks out. The other is the nationalist group out and about in the company of several bottles of alcohol on a Saturday night. An American man (not a woman) approaches them and starts boasting about... current US policies and politics, and a fight breaks out. I don't expect any of these scenarios to come about, but as we are discussing risks we should name them. Otherwise the advice will be harder to interpret and its value decrease. Even though this is the year of surprises I would not let apprehension limit my movements, beyond what is reasonable, and I think you will have a wonderful time in Denmark.
We are very respectful of other cultures and very tolerant of differing opinions. The political environment is very tenuous each day. Its just not a comfortable time for us. Our son-in-laws exchange family he lived with in Denmark while going to school lives near Odense and we had hoped to make contact with them. My husband has many cousins we visit every year in Germany and they have visited us also. We are spending a week with them in May. It will be interesting to discuss their view points.
I do want to thank all of you for your helpful comments. If I knew how to do private messages, I would have responded to each one of you. I just wanted you to know we will be quiet and respectful.

Thanks so much!
I think we have to differentiate between the US government and Americans. What the world is angry at right now is the government and protests will reflect that. If that upsets people, perhaps it's better to stay home. My view is that it's always good to get away from American news and social media and see how the world really sees our country.
There will always be some idiots in every country and some people who want to debate and decry other countries. Most people won't care and will gladly take your money.
It's probably worth remembering that not everyone cares about money as much as the average American. "Tourist dollars" came up in another thread a day or two ago too. Unless their livelihood directly depends on it because that is the industry they're employed in, the vast majority of people don't care how much you spend.
The question assumes that everyone in Denmark has uniformity of thought. The answers, some of them, assume everyone in Europe and everyone on the RS forum share that uniformity of thought. All unlikely to be correct assumptions.
People do realize that EU Parliament is right of center and a few countries like Italy, Hungary, Slovakia haven't been this far to the right since WWII and other countries like Germany have significantly extreme right leaning regions. Other countries like Austria are on the cusp of going to the right.
People are much much more often good than not, so I doubt any tourist will have any issues. But don't assume you and they are thinking alike.
Since it's the weekend, I'll post a music video to embellish this thread. Probably nobody clicks through when I do this but hey...
I've been listening to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers this morning.
This one is from the people of Greenland dedicated to JD Vance and Pete Hegseth -

This one is what The Donald was saying about tariffs at the beginning of the week. Changed his mind by Thursday though -
Ah Tom Petty, too soon gone. Thanks for the links, GerryM.
