There are MANY possible day trips from London. What exactly are you looking for out of the trip? College towns, cities, rural areas, castles/palaces, WW II history...There's all kinds of options, and any of them can be the "best," depending on what kinds of things you want to see.

I'm confused. Are you looking for several day trips or only one? A day trip is automatically a round trip, in one day.

Do you know that Stonehenge and Dover are at completely different ends of the country?

What do you want to get out of a day trip - different people want or prefer different things...

A few years ago we took a Gray Line tour that included Salisbury Cathedral and the Magna Carta, did lunch there, then Stonehenge, and finally Bath. It was along day but well worth it. We had lunch at the Salisbury Cathedral, two hours at Stonehenge was plenty, and then 2-3 hours at Bath which was also plenty. Worked for us.
