I second the recommendation of London Walks. It's not the only walking tour company by any means but it has a lot going for it. No need to pre-book and good value for money. There may be some variability in the skill of the particular tour guide but the London Walks tours I've taken of all been enjoyable and informative. Some of their guides are certified Blue Badge Guides and if so the description of the tour will usually highlight that fact. Blue Badge Guides are the best of the best.

I recommend two companies based on my experience;
1) London Walks. I've been on three of their tours; Beatles, Olympic Village (in 2010 before the 2012 games) and Westminster by Gaslight. All were excellent.
2) Insider London - I went on their London Underground and Tube Tour in March. It was terrific. You will need to make a reservation through their web site.
