When we do it, it is via public transit. You take the train from the airport to Rome and train to Civiitavecchia. The Civit.... train station is within sight of the cruise port. If you have a lot of luggage you might consider taking a taxi - fixed rate of 48 euro for four people and luggage from the airport to the center of Rome. Of course, reverse when the cruise ends.

PS -- Just check your hotel locations -- terrible !!!! You must be using points. Forget about the fixed price taxi. It is outside the range. But the only way to those hotels will be via taxi. And then a taxi to the train station for the train to Civit.... You really need to re-think your hotels. It will be expensive and time consuming if you want to see anything in Rome. Please ..... look at a map of Rome. Any saving on the hotels will be exceeded by the cost and inconvenience of the hotels locations. Save your point for a US vacation when you have a car.

Thank you !

Oh my... not even using points . I just thought I would stick with a chain of hotels I’m familiar with . It was showing 3.6 Km away from major attractions and we walk offen , so seemed good lol. Is there a hotel that u would suggest ?

Personally we always stay in the Termini area for the convenience to local transit and the train station. Hotel Sonya and Aberdeen are good starts but several others are available. However, they will not match the price that I saw for those hotels. There is a reason why they are that cheap. And the Rick Steves' gudebook for Rome is full of centrally located hotels. One of the reasons to travel is to experience to a degree some of the local culture and maybe a little outside of your comfort zone. Staying with American brand products is not always the best practice. Even McDonalds and Burger Kings menus in Europe are different.

3.6 km is about 2,25 miles from which ? major attraction. A couple miles walk is a good 45 mins considering street traffic, stops lights, etc., It is not like walking a mile in the country side. So you could be a couples hours of walking just to and from and getting started.

To give you a reference point -- Find Termini and then the Vatican. From Termini to the Vatican is a good hour walk at a brisk pace. We tend to take the bus to the Vatican and walk back to the Termini seeing the things we want to see. You really should get a map of Rome for your planning.

If you stay in Rome proper, the most economical way to get to your hotel will be using public transit. But you might want to consider using consider a private car service. It wont be cheap, but considering the total cost of the trip it will be a small indulgence. After a long flight, jet lag, not being familiar with the area, there is nothing better than having a private driver meet you inside the terminal and get you to your hotel. No fending off the privateer cabs, waiting in the regular taxi line, or just having a "lost" feeling. We can not say enough good things about Rome Cabs. It is a private car service (not a cab company despite the name) but only cost about a little more than a regular taxi. We always use them and have always been very pleased. Go to romecabs.com and see what you think. We just send an email detailing our needs and they answer us with a quote within 24 hours. At one time you did have to pay cash (Euros) and the end of the journey, but I think they now take credit cards.

If you don't have a great deal of luggage, taking the train from Rome to the cruise port is a fairly easy undertaking. A private car service will definitely be expensive for that leg, but perhaps worth it if you have a great deal of baggage.

With regard to a hotel in Rome, (even though I don't know what your budget is), here is a place you should check out. We have stayed at Hotel Fontanella Borghese many times and have always been pleased. While it is not "luxury", it is very nice and the location is great. The staff is very friendly and helpful. You can walk to Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Nuvona, even Vatican city. They also have a sister hotel closer to the Pantheon called Hotel Due Torri. We always send an email directly with our request for a booking and we get an answer back in 24 hours or less. Ask for a room overlooking the courtyard as rooms overlooking the side street can get noisy. The web site is www.fontanellaborghese.com. Check it out and see what you think.

Regarding Hotel Location, the two you picked are a bit out of the central area. Despite the advertised distance, I would not consider them an easy walk to the main sights. Many on here prefer to stay more central and be able to walk. Your hotels will work if you figure out and are comfortable with Public Transport. Your first hotel is a couple blocks from the Ponte Lungo Metro stop, so you can hop on that and get to town center easily. Your second hotel is about the same from the Palmiro Togliatti train station, where you can catch the FL2 commuter train or the Regionale trains.

It is also possible that staying in a real neighborhood might offer some interesting experiences, but I find that the case if I am there for a week, I think your days will be packed seeing sights.
