Solo traveler in Austria

I will be in austra with friends in May. We will be parting ways and I want to do a day or two solo before I head home. However, I’m hesitant. I’m a fairly experienced traveler, but don’t know the local customs or language other than English.

They are heading off on a tour in Salzburg.

I was thinking that maybe doing a train to airport would give me a nice little tour with little worry.

Train from Salzburg to where?
Or other suggestion that is fairly straightforward. I.e. I won’t get lost.
I am open to a safe airport in neighboring countries.
Thoughts?

Where are you flying home from? Where will you have beeen with your friends?

Also, may I suggest you post this in the Austria destination forum, for more attention.

Younger Austrians will all have learned English in school, so a language issue is unlikely.

The obvious choice, if you are limited to only a day or 2 would be to take the train to your departure city. In this case, either Munich or Vienna. Both are cosmopolitan cities, and those in tourist facing jobs, the ones you are most likely to encounter, are used to monoglots who only speak English. I would encourage you to learn a few of the polite phrases in German.

I agree with moving this question to the Austria part of the forum.

It is not clear from your post, will you be in Salzburg with your friends? Or can you travel to Salzburg with them and then part ways? Salzburg it is a nice city to visit solo (I have). It is very easy to take a direct fast train from there to Munich. There you can change trains and get to the Munich airport, or stay in Munich a night before your flight.

repost this in DESTINATION Q&A - AUSTRIA - you'll get more responses.

Salzburg is one of my favorite towns in all of Europe. I think you could easily spend 3-4 days there. A tour to the Salt Mines is amazing and so much fun - they have a train, slides, a boat - all deep in the salt caves. Eagle's Nest is also a great day trip option.

Your question is a little vague to me. Why not just stay with your friends? Where are you flying home from?

Is Vienna part of your trip?

Regarding the language issue....I have spent some time in Austria over the last couple of years. I am surprised how much English is spoken just about everywhere you will go.

I stay in the same hotel when in Vienna. I've been there numerous times. The people working at the reception desk speak English to each other. Why? Because some don't speak German but they all speak English.

Hi, I travel solo often, and you will be so excited when you do it yourself, too. The easiest destinations for airports are Vienna or Munich. Since you’re in Austria, I’d pick Vienna. It has amazing museums and gorgeous architecture, beautiful pastry cafes, etc. Pick a hotel close to St.Stephen’s Cathedral because the metro stop is right there. It’s an easy metro ride to the train or the airport tram, and you’re close to the pretty museums and pedestrian only streets.

The train from Salzburg to Munich is a little over two hours, and there’s some nice scenery along the way.

I was just in Vienna in December for the Christmas Markets. Here’s what I wrote about the small hotel I chose for my adult daughter & me:
”Our hotel, Gastehaus Deutscher Orden Wien, was a block away. It’s located in the same building entrance as the chapel where Mozart played. Our room was basic but safety & location were excellent! I would recommend this for a solo traveler. The hall had a balcony door for photos of the cathedral roof designs, too.”
