Rome day tour, Through Eternity - Rome Underground Colosseum or Ceaser shuffle?

First time in Rome, only there 2 full days. We will be doing the Vatican tour with Through Eternity, should we also spend a day doing the Underground Colosseum Tour (+ 3rd tier, Romann Forum & Palatine Hill) or can we do the 3 (Colosseum, Forum, Palatine) by ourselves with the audio Rick Steves Ceaser Shuffle tour?

The only problem with the DIY tour using the RS app is that you cannot see the Colosseum underground or third ring unless you book a separate tour. That particular tour is available on the Colosseum web site but sells out frequently. Check for your specific date and see if a tour is available. if not, you will have to decide if it's worth the extra $$ for the guided tour from Through eternity. The upside to a DIY tour is that you control your pace and see the things that you want to focus on. Here is a link to check for the Undergrond/Third ring tour. Scroll down a bit and you should see it on the left side.

We are only there three full days and decided on doing a Tour of the 3 (Colosseum, Forum, Palatine) with Walks of Italy and we are also using them for the Vatican. I don't want to spend the short time we are there searching around, once my tours were booked I was able to move on with my itinerary planning. In reading the reviews of Walks of Italy on The trip advisor website I saw that many people did book the two (Vatican and big3) with them for their trip, so I found it was not unusual to book multiple tours during one short stay.

Thank you so much for this tip, it is available on the date we need! There are 2 options, they look exactly the same, but a price difference. Do you know which one I should choose?

Free Underground and third ring English Tour+Reservation Fee - 2e
Underground and third ring English Tour+Reservation Fee - 11e

And it is called a 'tour' - does someone take you and talk you through these areas, that would be incredible!

Heidi, I don't know what dates you are traveling, If you go directly to the Walks of Italy website they will give you a full description of each tour and the cost, and it is quite a bit more than the process you have and a calendar showing you the dates they offer the tour. We are traveling in October and the Colloseum tour is already sold out for the date we booked.

You want the 11 euro tour/reservation fee. It is a guided tour and you have a head set so you can easily hear the tour guide. You also need to buy your admission ticket in addition to the tour. Make sure the tour is in English or you may need to learn Italian rather quickly!

Thank you to Stephen and Heidi for the post and reply! I have started getting serious about planning our days in Rome at Xmas and if I'd waited much longer, the tour for our preferred days would have been sold out since it is already slim pickings today.
