The primary place to cruise is between Ruedesheim/Bingen to St. Goar or Boppard. There is also some just south of Cologne. There are no continuous boat trips along the length of the Rhine that you can DIY

Are you inquiring about, for instance, taking a cruise from Basel to Amsterdam, or just exploring most scenic part, a short part of the river, the Rhein gorge?

About a Basel to Amsterdam cruise, yes, it would be hard to do that yourself, because those cruise ships go the whole route and the passenger sleep onboard at night. It's a package deal. I don't think there are many day trip cruise ships on the middle Rhein, from Basel to Mainz.

But there are companies offering day cruises on the most scenic part of the Rhein. There are a lot of stops on these cruises, and you go from a town you want to see to another town you want to see. You can arrange you own trip. You find towns you want to see and make reservations for that time. You can also utilize the trains that run along both banks of the Rhine in this region.

I've done this twice. Once I stayed for five nights in Boppard and went to Braubach (Marksburg castle) one day, and another day went to St Goar, saw Rheinfels ruins, then took a boat to Bacharach and came back to Boppard on the train. The third day I went to Koblenz and saw Deutsches Eck and the town.

The other trip, I was going to Bavaria, to the Oberallgäu, and wanted to use a discount Sparpreis ticket, but that wouldn't be a good idea on the day of arrival. So I landed at FRA and took a local train to St. Goar. The next day we took a train to Bingen and came back to St Goar on a boat. The following day, when we knew we would be able to catch the specified train, we went from St Goar to Bingen by local train, then caught an EC to Ulm, from which we went to the Allgäu.

I've seen almost everything I wanted to see on the Rhein in two trips; some people stay longer and see everything in one trip.
