Overnight stay in the Amalfi Coast from Rome

My daughter and I will be vacationing in Italy, Rome is our home base. We will be taking an overnight trip to the Amalfi Coast. I have been reading and reading about where to stay for the night and I am getting more confused on how to plan. We are taking the train from Rome to Pompeii, touring for the day, then onto Sorrento. But the more I read I see where Salerno is not as touristy and our chances of a bus ride to Amalfi from Salerno is not as croweded. We are returning to Rome from Salerno so what are any experiences from staying in Salerno, bussing to Amalfi, then taking a Ferry back to Salerno to catch a train to Rome. I know this is a lot but I'm trying to get the most out of the day.

Thank you all. I have three weeks to make a decision.

I hate to "rain on your parade" but I will. First Amalfi is an area and not a destination point. I think an overnight from Rome is very impractical given the transportation problems involved. The beauty of the Amalfi coast is the coast or more accurately the villages along the coast and the ride between the villages. You can do what you suggest. See Pompeii, overnight in Sorrento, bus/ferry to Salerno the next day, train back to Rome but you are spending a lot of time on trains and buses. The Amalfi coast area really deserves a couple of nights if not three. I think you are trying to do too much in one day.

To clarify there is a town called Amalfi and judging by all the tourist I saw there last week it is a destination point.

I agree with Frank that you are trying to fit a square peg into a round hole traveling to far to stay one night. Pompeii is a lot to see on foot. And then it takes time waiting to get the train to Sorrento or Salerno.

For your short time I would recommend you using this service partly:

You can take a taxi (or walk, about a mile I'm told) from the excavations to Pompei (city) train station and take a Trenitalia train to Salerno. The fare is €2.40, trains every half hour, 45 minute journey. Salerno is mostly level and easy to walk. The buses stop next to the train station and the ferry pier is a couple blocks away. It's about 15 minutes to walk from the historic center to the train station or the ferry pier. I don't know if there's luggage storage at the train station. I assume you'll only take a small overnight bag and leave the rest of your things in Rome.

I think Salerno is marginally better than Sorrento, because most of the Amalfi towns are closer to Salerno.
