Yesterday, 9-8-19, I confirmed with the Museum that there is free luggage storage at the Ruins of Paestum! This will make any daytrip to Paestum much easier. We are headed that way soon!
This is what they said "we provide a free store luggage service (included in the ticket price) in the ticket office by the archaelogical area entrance named "Porta Principale". It is located 300 m south of the Museum, along Via Magna Grecia, just near the crossroad between the train station road and Via Magna Grecia:

Hope you had a great trip. We're heading to Paestum and this is the same question I have -- safe luggage storage. How did it work out for you?
