We are a party of six and day tripped to the Loire Valley from Paris. Efficient connections through the great SCNF app and easy train ride. We left Paris Austerlitz at 7:30am and returned by 7:40pm.
We toured Clos de Luce, Chenonceau and Chambord. We used the Acco-Dispo tour company. Pascal was our driver.
We had a great day touring: Comfortable, air conditioned Mercedes van, efficient timing and a charming driver who, though not a guide, provided abundant information about the chateaus. He even stopped in Amboise to allow us to buy great picnic supplies.
We went with the universal user recommendations not to eat at the quick serve at Chenonceau and opted to picnic on the banks of the river Cher instead. Much better.
We highly recommend using Acco-Dispo for Loire valley tours.

Did you picnic at a regular picnic grounds located a little way from the chateau ?

No but that is lovely. It is back from the river a little and shaded. Pascal chose a riverside venue just past Chisseaux- very nice
