My husband is mobility challenged. He walks with a cane and is unsteady on his feet. How strenuous is it to visit the Holy Monastery of St. John and Cave of the Apocalypse? I have read online that there is no wheelchair access and have read somewhere (don't remember where i read it) that it is strenuous. Is it strenuous because it is a long walk, steep stairs or something else? I would appreciate any insight into visiting here. Thank you.
I was there last July. I am 85 (84 then), bent with osteoporosis and use a walking stick. I took it very slowly and managed to get all the way to the Monastery. It is long, and steadily uphill, but not especially steep. Occasionally there are shallow steps, but rarely a hand rail. The last bit, when in sight of the monastery, is probably the steepest. A hat and plenty of water plus frequent rest pauses were essential.
Bus or taxi up to Chora, and follow signs from there; no need for a guide.
