Dolomites in Winter (using public transport)... Advice, please!

Hi,
I'm Sara from Scotland, I'm currently an au pair in north Italy and I reckon since I'm living here I have to visit the dolomites. I have done a little bit of reading up but not found a lot of useful info for me.
I want to go see the strada delle dolomiti, going from Bolzano to Cortina. Near Cortina there is a beautiful lake called Lago di Sorapiss which is totally blue and gorgeous looking in pictures. I also read that the Alpe di Siusi region is gorgeous.
Really I would love some advice on the following
- where I should go (during day/weekend trips and not weeklong excursions)
- where i should potentially stay the night as my base
- whether it is a good idea or not to go during December/January
- how can I reach these places with public transport. I am guessing train to Bolzano e then a bus to my base area.. Is it doable??
Thank you all so much in advance. Please tell me your favourite dolomite spots!!
