We will be spending a couple of days in Bellagio at Lake Como and are wanting to visit Switzerland. Is it possible to do so by train, without originating from Milan? I have heard that the train ride allows you to see some amazing views. Otherwise, has anyone done this with a driver? If so, did you feel it was worth the time and money?
I believe you can take the ferry to Mennagio and then the bus to Lugano.
Lugano is not a whole lot different than the Italian lakes, just posher and more expensive.
Take the ferry to Varenna, train to Tirano, then a train over the Bernina Pass (doesn't have to be the Bernina Express, but it could be, and yes, the views are amazing) to St Moritz. You could take the same way back, or a little quicker, a bus over the Maloja Pass to Chiavenna, then train to Varenna and ferry back to Bellagio.
rockets post is absolutely accurate . So easy to get to with little travel time to Lugano. Nice lakeside lunch, stroll that is the beauty and joy of Lugano. I have also done the St Moritz excusursion by train but while it is quite nice the travel, time imo is too long for a day trip. Be sure to see Varenna while u are in Lake Como area, it is wonderful, romantic and a must see.
