Day trip to Lascaux

Hello,
We will be on the Oct 2014 Loire to S. of France RS tour.
On Day 6 we will visit Rouffignac Cave before spending the night in Sarlat.
The next day we have a whole day in Sarlat.

My question is:
I would like to spend that next morning (of that "free day" we have in Sarlat) to go to Lascaux Cave and back.
I realize that Lascaux II is the replica cave, however, I am not sure I will be back to this region again, and would like to visit a place that I studied during college.
Is it fairly easy and possible to travel there from Sarlat, see the Lascaux II replica cave, and travel back in a half day? For example leave early morning and be back by lunch?
Can this be done without booking a full day tour through a local travel company? (Most of the full day tours go to Lascaux and Rouggignac Caves.)

If so, approx. how much might a taxi, shuttle, tour, ect to just Lascaux and back cost and "who with" or "what method" might be the best way to do it?

Thanks so much,

=)

Hi, Geoffrey. The Sarlat free day is usually on a Wednesday, to allow you to explore the morning market, but there may be exceptions. Check your dates again before reserving. Our advice is to either

Hi Laura,

Can you please confirm what you said, I am a bit confused.
The Oct 2014 Loire to S. of France RS tour, which starts on Sun the 5th shows that we are in Sarlat on the 7th day, -
which would be Sat. You made the comment below...

Am I incorrect in how I am interpreting the itinerary?

Thanks,
Geoffrey

In 2009, I took a taxi to Lascaux II (and Font-de-Gaume) from Sarlat and really enjoyed it. I was travelling alone, so this was a "splurge" experience for me, but if you're on a tour, I would think you could go in with other people and cut the cost. Have a wonderful time!

You might email Phillippe of Allo Phillippe -- http://allophilippetaxi.monsite-orange.fr/ -- for a price quote. We were in Sarlat in October a few years ago and had him take us around for about 6 hours. If you click on the Tarifs-Rates link on the left side of the page, you can see what the prices are, but it might be lower in October. It was not cheap because it was only my husband and I, but it was well worth the cost. If someone else wanted to join you, it would be cheaper because the cost is per vehicle, not per person. He took us some places we would never have known about and told us about the area, i.e. it's more than a taxi ride. He waits while you tour whatever you tour on your own.

You will love Lascaux II, even if it is a replica. It took my breath away. That day the main places we went were there, Font de Gaume and Maison Forte de Reignac -- http://www.maison-forte-reignac.com/main.php?l=en -- which had only recently opened to the public. We also drove by the Roque St. Christophe -- http://www.roque-st-christophe.com/main.php?l=en -- fascinating. I wish we would have had time to stop, but that gives us another reason to return someday.

You could plan for a few hours doing those things, or anything else you might like to do in the area and the day would be tailored for you by Phillippe.

Be sure to walk in the part of Sarlat that has the gaslights after dark. It's magic.

Sounds like Lo and I did the same trip with Philippe :) Highly recommended! I had originally booked the 6 hours for just me, but he had a last-minute couple want to come, so I shared the trip (and the cost) with them. Worked out well for me!
