My husband and I will be in Salzburg May 6-8. We would like to tour the countryside outside of Salzburg on May 7. We have heard that Hallstatt and the Salzkammergut area is beautiful. We will not be renting a car. What tour do you suggest taking? Is it too much to see Lake Wolfgang, Hallstatt, and Salt Mines in one day? I am interested in a small group or private tour, but don't know what company to go with. Also, is it worth the money to do a private tour? If so, who would you suggest. Any information that is beneficial is very much appreciated. Thank you!
There are salt mines in numerous locations in Austria. I assume for travel efficiency you would go to the salt mine in Hallstatt rather than the one in Hallein, outside of Salzburg. So it would really be travel from Salzburg to Wolfgangsee to Hallstatt and back to Salzburg, and that you would visit St. Gilgen or Strobl instead of taking the time to go across the lake to the town of St. Wolfgang. Still, I think if you plan to do justice to the places you stop at, it's a little much for a single day.
Although there is a rail connection between Salzburg and Hallstatt via Attnang-Puchheim and Bad Ischl, you can only get to Wolfgangsee by car or bus. The round trip by car, Salzburg to St. Gilgen to Hallstatt to Salzburg, which is the fastest route, would take 3 hours without stops.
Having spent two nights and more than a full day in Hallstatt, I don't think half a day would be enough time, particularly if you include going up the incline and hiking back to the salt mine, then taking a tour, then coming back down (est. 3 hr).
