My 21 year old granddaughter & I will be in Rome for 5 days the first of July. Want to take a day trip to Pompeii. Not sure what is the best way to do this. Leaning toward bus tours that include lunch in Naples. Would appreciate any advise. Thanks

If you have Rick Steves Rome or Rick Steves Italy (and you should - they have LOTS of great tips and assistance), they each have a chapter on Pompeii with all the details on visiting on your own from Rome.
In short, you take a train from Rome to Naples (70 minutes, book in advance online for best fares), then a local Circumvesuviana train (about 40 minutes, cheap, not bookable in advance) from Naples to Pompeii Scavi; this is the stop right at the ruins. Of course, you can also take a bus tour if you wish.
