Three days ago we took a day tour from Rome to Cerveteri and Tarquinia booked through the Get Your Guide app, a Berlin based clearinghouse. The online process was straightforward, but we were a bit anxious if it would all work out.
It was great! We met our guide, Simone Malizia, at the line A Metro stop Cinecitta (yes, the famous movie studio). He was prompt, courteous, and multilingual after working for Alitalia for many years. He drove us out of Rome, stopping for coffee and pastries at an excellent bakery. He handled the traffic with aplomb and paid Autostrada tolls.
Entrance fees to the archeological sites are not included in the tour fee and the guide does not accompany you around the ruins. Simone had provided excellent overview of what to expect at each place. He also gave us a local cellphone in order to contact him for pick up and for questions. This worked extremely well! Each site has an excellent small museum. After the Cerveteri stop, he pointed us to restaurant options in Tarquinia for lunch. Prior to our self guided walks, he provided chilled drinking water for our convenience.
While we booked this via Get Your Guide, Simone’s local Rome based business is called Scoot Around Rome and his day tours can be booked directly through that site. He does many other Rome day trips besides the Etruscan one we chose. We visited the impressive Etruscan museum at Villa Giulia in Rome near the Borghese the day prior to our day trip to the archeologic sites. The combined activities complement one another and give you a more complete picture of this fascinating pre Roman culture.
Altogether, a great find!
